Pretty sure the first movie I saw involved the Muppets.

First "grown up" movie I saw was The Good, The Bad, The Ugly IIRC, when I was 6 or 7. My stepdad is a huge fan of westerns and wanted to instill good taste in me.

Yeah, ridiculous, I know what you're talking about. I was banned from seeing my best friend when I was 10ish because his crazy fundie mom learned that I had "magic cards" (i.e. Magic the Gathering).

Oh and I got grounded after that first movie back in the theatre my senior year for not asking permission first.

Bear in mind it was a PG13 rated movie, a Friday night, and I did call home. Just my parents weren't home so I left a message with a sibling about where I was rather than asking permission.

Still grounding a kid who basically only goes to school and church is a fairly silly exercise.

TBH I think for most of the fundie Christians it's not so much about fear of supernatural elements literally inducing heathenism in their children, it's more an expression of xenophobia and paranoia that their faith is "under attack" from the outside world, egged on by the echo chamber of fundie media outlets.

I got it the worst tho.

They were too tired by the time my brother was in high school.

He went to school dances, played Magic, got away with all sorts of **** I couldn't. Oh the burdens of childhood.

like I don't think most fundie parents are terrified that reading Harry Potter will literally turn their kids into witchcraft-practicing Satanists

they are terrified that Harry Potter is a window into the outside world and their kids might want to experience that outside world

hahaha what was yall's parents' stance on those troll dolls?

Spoiler:
i already know, our church banned them

I remember when my mom threw away my D&D books because one of my teachers gave her a book called "Turmoil in the Toybox" which was some fundie nonsense about how satanic and evil everything from smurfs to care bears to transformers was

there was a lot of nonsense about D&D in other media too

I remember an episode of unsolved mysteries painting it as some really weird, underground occult thing

edit: lol @ the reviews for that book
09-20-2013 , 12:37 AM
"My Little Pony . . . Unicorns and winged horses, also known as a Pegasus, are derived from Greek and Roman mythology. . . . Because these toys are based on mythological creatures, they are occult. Mythology is in contradiction to God's Word. . . . The unicorn is a symbol of the anti-Christ, which the prophet Daniel described in his vision as the little horn which rises in the midst of the ten horns."

"In a sense, Care Bears offer a form of Humanistic psychology, designed to include love, involvement and spontaneity, with the goal of instilling personal growth and the achievement of full human potential. Putting it simply, Humanism teaches: we are God; there are no absolutes; and we control our own destiny."

"Many parents have expressed concern that their children, after watching the 'He-Man' cartoons, go running throughout the house with plastic swords held aloft shouting, 'by the power of Grayskull, I have the power!' God's Word warns us that only by the blood of Jesus do humans have any power and authority over others. There is no mention of the power of Grayskull"

Et maybe? I can recall standing in line for it on my birthday.

Eddie: looking up, it would have been my 6th birthday, so I guess it's very unlikely it was actually my first movie.
