hanging out with the internet poker kids, we would call each other by our internet names. it kinda reminded me of native american names. our names were interesting and colorful and personal. we weren't all calling each other the random generic names that most people have these days. i liked it. of course everyone called me filthy.

but our names were actually personal. it feels like that's the way names should be.

People call me by my shortened internet name. It feels really personal.

when pog meetups are a regular deal, the best i can hope for is kokomo. Kok is highly likely. But the other bunch of people I know from the internet i met irl know me by some ridiculous buddhist name that i came up with in a fit of boredom at work, so it could be worse.

That said, I like having multiple names for multiple different situations

It's almost Orwellian how quickly we switched from using "sex" to using "gender". I'm going to hold down this fort to the bitter end, like those Japanese soldiers in the Philippine jungles.

Sex and gender are different things.

George Michael sang "I want your sex"
Boy George wants your gender

If you see no value in distinguishing between physical characteristics and social roles I can't help you.

I don't see how this is Orwellian at all.

bah, physical characteristics define social roles in a sane world

when you had a baby in 1990, your friends would ask, "what's the child's sex?" now, they ask, "what's the child's gender?" one was correct. the other was laughably wrong (if you examine the etymology of "gender") until just a couple decades ago.

sounds like something Mitch McConnell would say.

Oh, you are talking about people using the word incorrectly. That isn't Orwellian, it's just ignorant.
05-30-2015 , 06:23 PM
i'm fine with co-opting the word gender to mean what it means these days, since we didn't have another better word to express those distinctions in usage that you mentioned. my issue is with gender replacing the word sex everywhere.
05-30-2015 , 06:26 PM
No one asks either of those questions when you have a baby
05-30-2015 , 06:26 PM
I think maybe dumb people don't want to say the word sex because it also means ****ing.
05-30-2015 , 06:29 PM
i'm pretty sure that's why the trend snowballed, which is what brings out the grammar nazi in me.
