I've been reading a book on Estonia... Damn that country has some fortitude. It's been beat on mercilessly throughout the years.

Reading this piece about the Boston Marathon bomber's sentencing today made me more strongly in favor of the death penalty that ever before. Good ****ing riddance to bad rubbish. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_a...atisfying.html

Camus closed the book on capital punishment more than 50 years ago. It's wrong and will always be wrong.

Pretty much this, how many innocents are you ok with dying in order to have the ability to kill the most guilty?

This isn't a bleeding heart thing either, or a "every life is precious and needs to be preserved no matter how monstrous" thing. I understand why people want the death penalty. I watch the murder porn shows and say "Yeah, that dude 100% needs the death penalty." But I can't justify it in the face of ****ing up and killing someone who is innocent.

Take the following two cases for instance. Joe Mcenroe admits to his crimes of slaughtering 6 people for essentially no reason (really, outside of "possible money dispute" no motive has ever been even hinted at.) This guy deserves the death penalty, was tried in a state with the death penalty and was spared his life by 4 jury members who essentially said before sentencing deliberation that death was 100% off the table for them. He was a ****ed up kid with a ****ed up childhood, but his crimes deserve death.

Then there is Rodney Reed. Facing down his final appeal, and granted a final stay of execution from the Texas court of appeals. He's a black man, who had an affair with a white cop's fiance, in Texas. Pretty much the only physical evidence that exists that shows he had a hand in her murder was some semen left inside her following what he claims was a consensual visit a day before her death. The ME who originally claimed that the semen could not have been from a visit along Reed's timeline has since recanted. The defense also has found new evidence in the blood pooling in the victim's body that indicates that the state's timeline of events is impossible, and that she died roughly 8-10 hours before the state claims, a timeline that would line up with Rodney's alibi.

And oh yeah, the cop fiance, he was found guilty in 2008 of kidnapping and sexual misconduct after what the victim alleges was rape following a call to police that he answered and under the guise of taking the woman home, took her to a park and raped her. That of course does not prove he was implicit in his fiancee's death, but it sure speaks to his character.

If you have time, listen to this and episode 43, a two part look into the investigation. http://swordandscale.com/sword-and-scale-episode-42/

These are the types of cases where I can look at it and say, yeah, the death penalty just isnt worth it. What if this guy is innocent (and the new evidence may soon show that) and we kill him? How does that make us better than the guy who bombed a marathon?

On a less serious note, that podcast (all of the episodes, not just that particular one) is both incredibly disturbing and highly fascinating, and I suggest it to anyone interested in true crime.
