One thing I always remember is that Atlee beat Churchill while WWII was still going on, unbelievable.

Mets: acknowledge them in your words - potentially at some appropriate point in the groom's speech. The power of identifying their influence upon yourself in address in front of all of your social life dwarves any other gesture.
The balancing act is when to do it - within the speech - and to get the sentiment and proportion right. Talking with your (soon to be) wife about this one aspect of your speech is also important - as after your marriage you (as a speaker at a wedding) are speaking as one of two and thus it is advisable that you tell her beforehand as you are, in part, speaking on her behalf. Your wife should appreciate this thoughtful gesture that acknowledges the new reality between you.

Best wishes

The valorisation of Churchill's political acumen is misplaced. Sure, he was right about Hitler, and he convinced a receptive FDR to enter the European theatre. But against the background of some of his other actions - this acumen is put in doubt.

a) His belief in a 'southern strategy in WWI' - Gallipoli and its catastrophic waste of human life - as First Lord of the Admiralty and chief advocate.
b) Did he learn anything - WWII he continued to argue for a 'southern strategy' - when Normandy and the Eisenhower approach dismantled German hegemony. Italy was a sideshow.
c) The demand for Montegomery to have command in the push eastward. These political considerations of which Churchill was highly influential - stalled Patton 6th army rapid march eastward.
d) Which then worked against Churchill change of mind and advocacy to enter Berlin before Stalin - well if Churchill had not interfered with the capture of France and the crossing of the Rhine - Patton would have entered Berlin weeks before Zhukov

And they are just his military misjudgements - I am sure you could go back to his time as Home Secretary in 1920s and critique the politics and efficacy of his social policies and actions.

He lost the election quite simply because he was an aristo and intended to pay the workiing-class men who had suffered for his victory precisely nothing for their efforts. The people correctly judged that he was fine at speechifying and terrible at governing a country in peacetime and voted someone more competent.

His reputation is more for his doggedness and moral courage - the willingness to stand and fight - as any strategic genius, I'd say. Although I think he was a very early sponsor of radar and nuclear weaponry, aiui.

As if people are ever elected or not because of such things. Any appearance of such is merely coincidence.
