driving across the middle of america sucks also. I used to drive semi-truck and there are some really boring stretches.

NY to LA could be an awesome trip if you give yourself enough time and take scenic routes when possible. I've done cross country more times than I can remember at this point, and a few times on my own. Last trip from Vegas to Chicago might have been my magnum opus of road trips.

If you only have 3 or 4 days to drive it, just fly. You won't enjoy the routes you'd have to take to do it in that amount of time, and you won't pass many special things.

Alone

And I do plan to spend more than 3-4 days on the journey. I want to catch some national parks and some interesting places along the way.

you should just visit new york, then fly to la, but instead of flying to la fly somewhere else instead

LA is fine. I suggest renting there and doing a loop so that you can return the car at the same place. I think budget rents to under 25s.

There are a couple different ways you might be interested in. If you want a giant dose of Americana, I'd probably say go south from New York towards West Virginia/Kentucky. If you take the I-70 through Ohio/Indiana, you're gonna want to kill yourself.. It will be days and days of wasteland going the northern route.

Super mega American route could be something like NY -> Philly -> Lancaster county PA -> Harpers Ferry WV -> Skyline drive through Shenandoah Natl Park -> get on the I-64 through WV to KY which is very scenic -> Louisville KY -> St Louis MO -> horrible nothingness through the midwest that cannot be avoided -> Denver -> Rocky Mountain Natl Park -> (optional Black Canyon of the Gunnison Natl Park) -> take the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton ->

Once you get this far west, you'll have #options

You can continue south into Arizona, I'd hit Canyon de Chelly in the Navajo nation -> Flafstaff to Grand Canyon Natl Park -> Vegas -> LA

Or you could loop due east into Utah and go for the grand tour of Canyonlands/Arches/Capitol Reef/Bryce/Zion -> Vegas -> LA

I can't recommend Utah highly enough. Its a stunner.

Just go through Colorado and Utah, they take 3 or 4 days just on their own. You'd be just as happy IMHO flying to Denver from NY and driving the rest of the way to LA, and you'd be maximizing the time you can spend at actually super sick places. Once you see some of these spots, you'll be sad you can't spend more time in them.

Like, you're gonna want to stay in Estes CO. (And Ouray, and Silverton, and Aspen and Telluride and Vail..) You're gonna want to stay in Moab UT. All the cool **** is in the west.

And thats not even including all the cool **** just in Cali either.. Theres like a million things..

You should be driving the 1 up the coast to Big Sur, or checking out Death Valley. **** it, go to Joshua Tree! It'd be better than wasting time driving through Kansas.

seriously, don't drive around in the eastern half of the us. maximize your time out west.

you might even want to fly to sf and make a big western loop to la, like through colorado and utah. that would be a great trip. you could go to yosemite that way, and tahoe

What's not to love about driving through Kansas?

There are big trips worth taking in the US, but you'd be driving through a large chunk of not-worth-it US.

New England tour, Coastal south tour, Four corners tour, and West Coast tour, all excellent. Mideast coast through Midwest tour is... not a thing. And you can't get around driving through Nebraska or Kansas or Oklahoma, all states we wish would get swallowed in a giant sink hole.

You'd be driving through the middle sections, and it all mainly sucks until you hit Colorado. You'll be hitting the best stuff after burning yourself out on 3-ish days of not that interesting long days of driving. Just fly into Denver and continue on, or fly to Cali and do a big loop like filthy suggested.
