I dunno about you all but I plan to enjoy the fact that 2021 doesn't suck (so far) for as looooong as possible.

Which might be five minutes.

Hopefully USA will catch up in next few years then.

if we will be back to normal on sept 1st, that's almost 2 years since the disease showed up. that doesn't seem especially fast to me
01-01-2021 , 12:54 PM
Lots of people treating things like normal already!
01-01-2021 , 01:20 PM
Happy New Year everyone!

The Black Death lasted 7-8 years. The Spanish Flu went 2 years in four waves. Speed-wise, we are probably doing pretty well.

I'm hoping for some normalcy by June 1st. I have no knowledge of anything, but my twins' B'nai Mitzvah is scheduled for mid-June, and I'm hoping we can see family by then.

i think we will be mostly vaccinated by summer, probably june
01-01-2021 , 03:17 PM
who the hell decided to make paper the size it is? "i think 8.5 inches by 11 inches is perfect!"

and is it the same size in countries that use centimeters?

Canada & provinces seem to be planning for September 1 for full distribution. I'm afraid that enough people will refuse the vaccine that it won't stop the spread, or that the next big mutation doesn't just make it spread faster (which is bad enough, because it actually means we need a higher vaccine uptake to stop the disease), but makes it resistant to the vaccine
01-01-2021 , 04:12 PM
yeah there's also a non zero chance all the vaccines turn out to be useless in real life conditions for whatever reasons... people not taking it, mutating virus, dangerous side effects, just doesn't work in real life

Cops are checking out my LinkedIn profile. Probably nothing, right?

There was a post that hit the front page about a month ago which some explanation for paper sizes, but I don’t remember anyone explaining why the differences.

other countries use a sizing system

A4 is closest to 8.5x11 but the ratio of the 2 sides is about the square root of 2, which makes it so halving the long side results in the same ratio

A5 is half the size of A4 and the size I use for notebooks

A6 is half of that and the size of small notebooks (and hobonichi planners)

the B sizes work the same way but are midway between the A sizes

if you didn't want to know all this and just wanted to know if the U.S. is alone in using a backwards standard when the rest of the world does something that makes sense, then yes, of course
