POG Buffalo: Inaugural Game POG Buffalo: Inaugural Game

Welcome to the first game of POG Buffalo, which is a forum adaptation of the lesser known board game gem Zoff in Buffalo.

In this game, we are placing cows into pastures. However, when it is your turn to place cows in your chosen pasture, you cannot tie someone else, so if you had chosen to play 5 cows in a pasture you aren't in and someone else already has 5 in there, you only get to play 4 of yours. And if someone else had 4 in there, you'd only play 3, etc.

Additionally, when a pasture fills up, the players with the most cows in that pasture get to place bonus cows in other pastures based on that pasture's bonus payout. And if the bonus placement fills up another pasture, then that one will also payout its bonus after the first one is done, etc.

Here is the game board I created in google sheets to manage the game state:

Up to 5 players can play.
Each player will get 10 cow cards and you'll play 2 each round (secretly via pm to mod, specifying which pasture for each card) and then i'll reveal and we'll place our cows. So 5 rounds of 2 cards each and then the game will do the final bonuses and then be over.

The cow cards: 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2

The number is how many you'll place (up to) on the pasture you chose that round.

We'll place into the chosen pastures from smallest to largest, so anybody who placed into Buffalo Range will go first, then we'll move on to TripleChain Rack and so forth.

But what if 2+ people placed in the same pasture?

Placement Priority:
1. Whomever has the most cows already in that pasture places first if they chose to place in that pasture this round. That continues for any players who already have cows on that pasture.
2. Of those who don't yet have cows on the pasture, whomever has the smallest cow card (least number of cows 2 to 5) for that pasture will place first.
2a. If 2+ players tied on cow card number, then letter on card closest to A

(so each of the 10 cards you get will have a letter A to Z on it)

Placement Rule:
You place up to the number on your card, but only so that your total cows in that pasture don't tie anyone else, so if you play a 5 and already had 2 in there but someone else has 7 in there, then you can only play 4 of the cows to get to 6 total since you can't tie

I'll post some more details and answer questions before we start, but i'll go ahead and post this signup to see who wants to play. It's a fun game and shouldn't take too long.

I plan to play and can take 4 others or if we get 5 who want to play then i'll just mod.

Not sure I completely understand right away, but sure.

Example on how Bonus works:

JMurder plays a 3E on Buffalo Range
Nich plays a 3S on Buffalo Range
IRTM plays a 2 on Buffalo Range
Eric plays a 1 on Buffalo Range

Eric plays first as he played the lowest number and gets 1 cow there
IRTM goes 2nd and places 2
JMurder goes 3rd since E<S and fills up the pasture

Now this field's bonus is 1-1 which means 1st place gets 1 and 2nd gets 1 (and 3rd+ gets nothing)

So JMurder would now play 1 bonus to any other pasture then IRTM would place 1 to any other pasture

Then we'd move on to the next pasture that someone played a card for, etc

Note that Sheep Hills has bonus structure of 0-1-2-3 so when it fills up the person with most cows there gets 0 bonus placements, 2nd place gets 1, 3rd gets 2 and 4th gets 3

We each have 48 cows and winner is whomever has the least cows left at the end of the game.

The cow cards: 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2 = 33 cows gone if you never have to lose any to ties or a full field, but then with bonuses you can get out more cows

End of Game Bonuses:
Any fields that do not fill up by end of game (after round 5) will have their bonuses payout at the end, but they must be placed on that field, until all paid or it gets filled. This is also the only time ties are ok, when we add these bonus cows to their own field at the end of game, it is ok if it results in a tie.

Example:
Chameleon Crossing has 14 spaces with 1-2 bonus payout

At end of game, the state is:
JMurder 5
IRTM 4
Nich 2

So 11/14 are filled so bonus will payout. JMurder will put 1 more on and IRTM 2

So,
JMurder 6
IRTM 6
Nich 2

and if it instead had been:
JMurder 5
IRTM 4
Eric 3
Nich 1

Then 13/14 are filled
Jmurder would put 1 and then IRTM gets no bonus 2 cows because it's already full.

yup

if your card can't be played due to a full pasture or because placing any cows up to your card number would all result in a tie, then you don't get to place any and still lose that card (as each of the 10 cards is only played once).

Also note that you have to choose 2 different fields each turn with your 2 cards that you submit.

This looks too much like the Boat Game.

Nah this is 5 rounds and done; not 5 decades and done

Handy Reference Sheet:

Placement Rules:
1. Players that already have cows in a field:
A. Players with more cows in field
B. Players with less cows in field
2. Players with no cows in the field:
A. Smaller number on cow card (letter closer to 'A' for ties)
B. Larger number on cow card

* No ties allowed after each person places their cows
* You may place fewer cows than your cow card shows
* Cow cards are discarded after each round
* Field cards are taken back into hand after each round, unless field is full.
(Note: In our version, you don't have 'field cards' you just say which field for each cow card in the pm)

Rounds 1 thru 5:
Bonuses are placed into other fields, can be split, no ties after placement

Round 5:
Bonuses placed in same field, limited to space available, ties are OK

Nice, I win. I think I'll retire on top. Hope it runs & will read it at my leisure, but don't really have the bandwidth to take on more stuff right now, even if it's potentially simple stuff.

Don't think I completely grasp it yet but should understand enough to give it a go. I am in

Ok that’s 4; we’ll start tomorrow morning and can take another player if we get one

The game is much less complex than it seems when writing out the rules in the thread

Yeah after re-reading I think I got it all. Will be interesting to figure out the strategy

I plan to submit random number for the first few rounds and claim brilliance or bad luck as appropriate.

Spoiler:
Or will i?

Ok, four players:
Nich
Eye
Dizzy
IRTM

I will rand card letterings with some balancing to ensure one color doesn't have all of the lower letters and then we'll get started.

With 4 players, we will not use the largest pasture (Sheep Hills) so will have 10 to play into.

We'll also randomize 2 pastures each and each get one cow to start in each of those 2 to start (important for placement rules).

Also, here is a rules site that may be helpful, but really the player aid above (and i'll post it immediately right after we start the game as well) is the best quick reference: http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...&ct=clnk&gl=us

The Hands:

Nich (red): 5c, 5e, 4d,4g,3c,3d,3i,2e,2g,2j
Eye (blue): 5b,5f,4a,4h,3e,3g,3j,2d,2f,2h
Dizzy (green): 5d,5h,4c,4e,3a,3k,3l,4a,4c,4i
IRTM (yellow): 5g,5a,4b,4f,3b,3h,3f,2b,2k,2l

(these all add up to 57 if you change letter to number so "balanced" however not perfect as distribution of those matters, but should be close enough; letters don't come into play often ime anyway)

The starting board after randing pastures:

Ok, so now we begin!

Simply pm me 2 card/pasture combinations. Note that you cannot use the same pasture for both cards in one turn, but you can on subsequent turns. If you want, you could go into WW Village every turn with one of your 2 cards, for example (assuming room in there)

Remember placement rules...being in a pasture with the most cows already means you place first there no matter what; and remember that nobody can tie after placing cows.

Handy Reference Sheet:

Placement Rules:
1. Players that already have cows in a field:
A. Players with more cows in field
B. Players with less cows in field
2. Players with no cows in the field:
