Murder mystery dinner party?

So I just made reservations to go to a murder mystery dinner party. Anybody ever been to one or thrown one before? What should I expect? The little bit of reading I've done online makes it sound really fun.

on a side note. Has anyone attempted to have a werewolf party before? Anyway to spice it up to where it can be played slowly over an evening without it getting boring/too slow?--or am I better off just buying a murder mystery party game from somewhere online?

I went to one once, it was kind of lame but some others at the table said it was a lot worse than other ones they had been to. I think there are two basic formats, one where you solve the mystery and one where it is a straight play that goes on all around you while you dine.

I believe that alcohol was invented so that people don't have to do this crap at dinner parties.
