How long would a chess portion take? I usually stay away from those threads due to sucking at chess.

FWIW: Tatiana wont work without someone hosting it is what Kruze told me. And no one has contacted hil for the info they might need.

Chess could be short if you forced semi- turbos. I would probably suggest that it runs concurrently with the entire rest of the tourney though so that it isnt a time limiting factor.

Are you thinking like a single-elimination tournament? Or randed one-off matches?

Maybe I could leave that to you or someone else to run since whoever runs it could also play?

I think the nature of the chess tourney would be strongly related to how many people planned on playing it, the potential (relative) reward, and the expected length of everything else.

All of which is hard to guess I'd imagine. We dont have to do it, just throwing out ideas.

Yeah, maybe I'll start putting up sign ups for the various games tomorrow so we know what we'll be working with & can map them out accordingly.

would you consider just scoring, say, a competitor's best 10 events for the leaderboard? That way you wouldn't have to play every game (I'm not particularly interested in codewords, for example) but would still have incentive to play as many as possible to get your best possible score

Don't really think it goes against the spirit of everything to have some dropable events. Just as long as it's only a minority.

Looks like there are exactly 20 different events. Top 15 scores count?

I'd be fine either way. But I think that scoring in the top 10 (5, 15, whatever makes sense field wise) being worth more points serves the same purpose functionally and still keeps the spirit of the entire event intact.

Another option might be to have people vote on the champion after all events conclude, with eligibility determined by playing at least x number of games.

I think saying "you must play everything" is problematic for 2 reasons:

1) It will reduce participation, as people who aren't interested in everything will drop out, even for things that they might ordinarily try.

2) It could ruin (or damage) games by having uninterested players play just for playing. It won't affect things too much if someone hates Guesstimania and just throws out a bunch of trolling 350 answers for everything. But all of the fun of something like WW or Codenames or Paint could really be lost if you have even just one person who isn't at least moderately into the spirit of the game.

There's absolutely not a requirement that people play everything. People can play anywhere from 1 to all of the events...you just won't win the overall contest by playing 1 event. Hopefully each event will be fun in its own right, though.

I've also PM'd lilrascal about options with Word Twist.

Sign-ups for various other things will go up over time. I don't really expect anything to actually start prior to November as there are so many moving pieces to coordinate, but I want people to have plenty of time to see what's going on & sign up if they're interested, or even play practice games in whatever they want 1st.

Triplechain?? Ya, I know, most here have given it a try. Some poggers are still at it.. (me (SubArcticK), warped, lilrascal, Derwi, nails, Kokiri, Donk4, etc).

And no, I don't think it should be in this, but I never miss an opportunity to plug it to help build the player base..

I also realized that the Walrus would work best as a grab-bag style Walrus, unless there is someone who wants to come in just to judge a Walrus contest.

That means that each participant would choose a category they want to judge, & everyone else will submit a song for that category. The person will only be responsible for grading the songs in their one category. Write-ups are always obviously great, but not necessary.

All songs would be submitted to me, & then I would reformat & send to the judge for anonymity. Then the judge would send the stuff back to me to reveal.

If there is too much interest, it would be broken up into 2 (or more games) so no one had to judge/submit that many songs.
