Yeah, not optional bc I’m not giving out diamonds to give points to my competition if it’s optional

to me, the point of this game is that when two people are thinking along the same lines when giving a clue such that their words are identical or closely morphologically related, that is when the clue is supposed to be duped

that is my clear rule that i have endeavored to apply consistently

this is tbh why I initially leaned towards thinker and Thoughts being duped, though i thought it was borderline

i have done my best to be transparent about my rationale for deciding that words should/should not be duped or are otherwise not legal. I've definitely made mistakes (I screwed up with whoever submitted gastroenterology or whatever as a clue for stomach; i should have permitted that), but this isn't all willy-nilly and haphazard
Fwiw, your rulings have all made perfect sense to me, and the only times I thought you made a mistake, you admitted as much. Most of it just common sense, and on the borderline cases, you get another opinion.

Personally, I prefer your way of doing it than just having a hard and fast rule of all root words being dupes, which actually seems even more arbitrary.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have done if Oyl and oil were both submitted for olive?

So no clue
This was me.

Mary Magdalene=cast the first stone

I see thinker/Thoughts and Oyl/oil as distinct and clear non-dupes. Maybe I’m making assumptions based on capitalization in the first instance, but deep thinker refers to a person, while Deep Thoughts is an old SNL skit. Similarly, Olive Oyl is a fictional character, while olive oil is used in cooking.

with Kool capitalized there is a good chance you get gang because there isn’t any other Kool with caps other than the cigarettes

Agreed, but I do think there's a point where even intent doesn't matter anymore. I mean, surely thought/Thoughts should be duped, even if the other guy is not aware of the SNL skit?

Agree with Gad's interpretive non-duping policies.

On a separate note: not to be the spoiler of the bunch, but I'm not really on board with obligatory bonus point awarding for clues. Bonus points is kind of a nice idea in the rare cases of really clever cluing, however, while it is a fair point that competitive urges will overrule the practice if it's optional, I would definitely not enjoy being forced to choose 1 or 2 "best" clues every single time I'm a guesser when the vast majority of the time I would have no actual desire to single anything out. It becomes pretty hollow and meaningless in that case. (In fact, it's conjuring up to my mind a feeling reminiscent of how when you take online courses, the instructor always sets up a forum and requires something like "2 posts a week" for grading, and subsequently every Sunday night the forums get filled with all these horribly inane, tortuously pointless posts as people rush to "post just to post" before the weekly deadline hits. God, I ****ing hate those posts, and the policies/lazy-ass instructors responsible, with a passion.)

Also, even in the cases of "standout good" clues, I think it's easy to underestimate the impact that all of the clues might have had in working together to complement each other and provide a fuller solution.

If anything I think it would work best and most honestly as a (very rare) mod award, like in other games - like, no one was planning to award anything, but dammit, that was just such a great clue it spurred me to action! Although that also probably doesn't work so well when the mod is also an active player.

Idk. Do what you do, but that's my opinion on the matter.
