A YouTube channel draft has been attempted and a grab bag draft to do with recommendations has been postulated in pub and I wanna draft stuff...
It's been a while since we've done a draft and there are some POG regulars who probably have never drafted before so I'd better flesh out the rules a little bit more fully what "Wanna draft? Signup below"
Each person who signs up picks a category. For example it could be "Marvel Superhero" or "Sandwich Filling" or "TV Theme"
Let's imagine that 10 people have signed up which would mean we have 10 categories and 10 players. Each player would draft (pick) from 9 categories (all but their own).
The list of players is randomised and that creates the order in which people draft things. When it's your turn you can pick from any of the available categories and the draft carries on until everyone has their 9 picks.
A lot of people don't care about scoring and winning drafts but here's how the scoring/winning works for people who do: Everyone judges and ranks the picks from their own categories with a couple of sentence write up for each pick. Rankings turn into points and the points are summed to find a winner.
What happens if someone takes forever over their pick?
You generally have a "clock" which is a amount of time to pick and if you over run the time then the next in line can pick. You can make up any missed picks at any point you get back to thread. This keeps the game running and the only real penalty you suffer is perhaps someone picks what you were about to pick.
How long is this clock? How will I know when it's my turn? What if it's the middle of the night and I miss my turn? That's not fair!
Whoa whoa, calm down. A clock is around 4 hours and you'll know it's your turn when someone PMs you that it's your turn (always PM the next in line when you make a pick)*. Everyone picks a sleep window of, I'm gonna say, 6 hours when their clock isn't running. That way even if your turn arrives just as you go to bed you'll still have 10 hours to make your pick which is more than reasonable.
Some other things:
-If we have a large amount of players then we can split this into 2 threads and you might be asked to judge more categories to make the scoring system a little less variable and the reveals a little more fun.
-If you don't want to draft but want to judge all/some categories then that's cool
-You can sign up with "category pending" as your status so that you can reserve your slot and still have time to think of a good category
-Try to make it clear with your category what sort of thing you're looking for. We've had problems in the past with things like Category:
Alcoholic Drink Pick:
Beer Is that too vague? Is the person who picked the category looking for something more specific than that? It can lead to disagreements and general reduction of fun, so be specific even if that means writing a paragraph next to your category
-No talking about undrafted items Category:
Sandwich Fillings Pick: I'm gonna go with
Ham but I was really close to picking Turkey!
-No hinting at what's a good pick if it's your category to judge, but chat away at the merits of a pick if you're not involved with the judging of it.
-Try to make categories diverse for fun. If someone choose the category
90s Pop Songs then you coming in with
80s Pop Songs is definitely not a good idea. The drafting world is so diverse that you probably wouldn't need to have another music category (although you could if yours is different enough)
