Favorite Fantasy Film

this one was really tough but ultimately went with Donnie Darko

It launched the mega career of Jake Gyllenhal and his sister

has everything, a very well made film with a tremendous supporting cast - just so well cast, everyone is perfect in their role

it's part teen angsty drama, part sci-fi adventure, part suspenseful thriller, and yet it all works out so fluidly and without any pretense

the perfect film and it's infinitely rewatchable

So close to the finish line but it seems we've run out of gas.
Better call a tow truck to drag those last few to the finish.

All of my category has been picked. I think I'm going to write up my rankings now and save them ready to post.

I also think we should put some deadlines in place.

Picks by the end of this weekend and rankings done and posted by Christmas?

Thoughts?

Rankings done by Christmas is not gonna happen imo, but I think anyone who is ready can just go whenever...everyone has had plenty of time to make their picks by this point, so no need to wait for them.

Was waiting, but I think I can just take my last pick now.

For fantasy, possibly the greatest animated movie ever, Spirited Away.

It's influence is all over 21st century animation, including about half of the Pixar catalogue.

Not really Disney but I guess since they bought North American distribution rights it may fit into a loophole; up to category judge if he’ll allow it

I dunno what to do with this category

I’ll just go with Exorcist because I just didn’t find it scary at all and it just didn’t seem to be in the top 50 horror movies for me. Maybe I missed something or maybe it doesn’t hold up to have the impact it did when it first came out.

I'm gonna start with a bit of preamble for my category. I've not seen all the movies and would like to, but it's a balance between holding up the draft and being fully informed. I've see at least all trailers and got provisional placings, but I'll try to watch a few over the coming days if time allows. If everyone starts posting reveals though, I'll follow suit and go with what I've got.

Movies with an IMDb rating of 6.5 or less

IMDb is a funny beast. There are plenty of good, bad and mediocre movies appropriately rated and plenty of movies that are completely overrated or underrated. I initially thought about a category of "underrated movies" but I think that gives people too much scope to post a highly rated and excellent movie claiming it's even better than people think it is. I wanted something to have some clear qualification requirements so there's no semantics.

I'm first going to list all movies in the order they were picked and give a few details. THIS IS NOT A RANKING

Some undrafted stuff that would have done well.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

Rating of 5.1

It's only disliked in my opinion because it moves away from the Michael Myers story line. If you ignore this then it's a solid movie.

Earth Girls Are Easy

Rating of 5.4

Kitch, Camp, Absurd. Whatever you want to call it, it's fun and a good rewatch.

Pootie Tang

Rating of 5.3

This is just straight up hilarious. Humour is right up my street and I have no idea why people didn't like it more. (I get why they don't now, but they never did.

There are so many 6.5 or lower films that I loved watching on repeat when I was a kid.

Beastmaster (6.2) was a favorite of mine.

Another one of my favorites was Dreamscape (6.3) which had a phenomenal cast with Dennis Quaid, Kate Kapshaw, and Max Van Sydow. This was sort of like Inception, with Dennis Quaid's character entering other people's dreams, while David Patrick Kelly (from The Warriors) was the antagonist who planned to assassinate the President of the US through his dreams.

Then I had all but decided to go with Gotcha! (6.2) which starred Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino in a spy thriller, where Edwards gets his skills from playing paintball on his college campus.

But then Nich took Tag, and the plotlines were too similar, so I decided to go the comedy route and took The Three Amigos over Spies Like Us.
