The choral thing kind of leaves me cold; hard to feel the personality of the singers, which is so important to me in this era. Love the video, though.
I was torn between this and the song I submitted. I guess I made the right choice.

i actually like johnny preston's singing on running bear.
love the transition between verse and chorus but yeah that ooogachakaoogachaka stuff is SO distracting!
pity because aside from that it's a better song than anything i've heard so far.

Look, I'm a total sucker for songs in this vein that are simultaneously melancholy and lyrically clever, like What's The Use Of Getting Sober (When You're Gonna Get Drunk Again). And I think that few people did that sort of thing better than Ella Fitzgerald; two of the greatest songs ever, for my money, are her doing I've Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good) and Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered. So I was predisposed to like this song...but the more I listened to it, the more I felt that the crooning style here doesn't really bring out the emotion in the song as much as I want it to, which in turn highlights the relative repetitiveness of the lyrics. I dunno.

still my favorite of the fallout 3 numbers...i toyed with the idea of the opener...I don't want to set the world on fire...but it was slower and more melancholy which you said you didn't like, plus it had less ella

*shrug*

Great voice, good energy. I wish it changed it up a little more or was a little longer with a little more room to breathe.

This song felt kind of blah at first but I started to really dig it after a few listens. The vocal style is still by and large Not My Thing in an Andrews Sisters-y kind of way for much of the song, and ideally I'd want it to kick into another gear at some point so that it doesn't feel quite so tethered to its period, but it's very enjoyable.

this really is a strong category

from here on out basically any song could have finished as high as top 5 depending on my mood

First, that video is excellent; there's something mesmerizing about seeing period footage like that. Second, this is arguably one of the more seminal/epochal songs ever, but what surprises is me is that despite its familiarity, it still feels fresh and full of energy. I really enjoyed this, and I wasn't expecting to.

Kind of deceptively, there's a lot going on here. The arrangement is more complex and interesting than it seems at first, at least to a musical novice like me, up to and including the tempo shift halfway through. Very unexpectedly enjoyable over multiple listens; I had this as high as 8, and there's not much between it and the ones immediately above.

which brings us to the top 10

72off
ArcticKnight
Bloobird
eyebooger
fnord_too
KarmaDope
RAORoman
Suqata
tchaz
xander biscuits

but it's 4:30 a.m. Berlin time and I'm just adjusting to being back on the East Coast after minimal sleep last night and a long flight today, so I will leave the rest of this reveal until tomorrow morning

for the suspense and such, and also because i can't keep my eyes open and i haven't unpacked yet

same reaction on shboom. REALLLLY??? was my first thought.

but it is indeed great. a classic. a bit corny at times. very andrews sisters at times. The soloist really pushes this song up a notch.

and having memories of Clue the movie rolling around my head while i listen surely helped

i really couldn't think of any 50s songs that i really cared about anymore. indeed the decade's songs were very repetitive and kitchy to me. now that i think tho I'd probably go with Shake Rattle and Roll.
or maybe Kansas City

And I could not NOT pick a fallout 3 song. just had to

How does a (correct me if I'm wrong here, I don't own a gaming console) post-apocalyptic shoot-em-up game have so many old songs in it? Wouldn't they have like future-y music or songs that go well with high-energy mass killings or something

answer: because they are cheap/free to use

and funny thing the oldstyle songs matched SO PERFECTLY in contrast to the bleak world.

the lyrics of some of them in that game...oh so ironic.

I don't want to set the world on fire....
civilization...

my other favorite was the Fox Boogie of course
but that was an instrumental. I tried to stay away from those

It's an aesthetic that started with the first Fallout game and its embodiment of 50s-era nuclear paranoia

I believe the first Fallout started out with a scratchy version of Louis Armstrong's A Kiss to Build a Dream On, which was just great

Irony is fun
