The safest way to play the first round IMO if you had no clue was to grab an R&B or Soul song from the 70's in spotify and start going to related artists until you found a newer group with a recent album.

Meh, as always I'm pretty slavish to my desire to actually submit something that I'll voluntarily listen to and like. Not that I would dislike modern R&B or soul necessarily since it's a good genre, but if it's from a has-been then it's probably not going to be great new material today.
