Business
Spoiler:
1. Cleveland

connection: surnames of US presidents ?? seems pretty weak .. is there anything more specfic?

Books and Arts

On books and arts...
[Spoil]could #1 be flute?

Then ballet would make sense as the answer for #5 - magic flute, Swan (idk if this is the answer but the Twilight protagonist is Bella Swann), Tap (dance, presumably a ballet style) and idk on #4[/quote]
I'm pretty drunk so a solid chance of lolbloo here tho

lolbloo for formating

Spoiler:
#1. is bag-pipes, specifically
#2. meh Charles Swann isn't the protagonist of A la recherche... but w/e the name likeness is probably overpowering, so idk
#3 seems, per eleanor, Spinal Tap
#4 is various (twisty?) dances?

fwiw, Magic Flute is an opera not a ballet. But ..

Finance #3 seems to be Baldwins - stanley, richard, james. Could the category be celebrity brothers?

EDIT: Just brothers - #2 is my old boss Dick Fuld of Lehman Brothers

Spoiler:
Cayenne should be in slot 2. Slot 1 is "Somoza".

connection is "sounds like a foodstuff"?? But that's pretty terrible because obviously Cayenne and Chili are flavourings, whereas Somoza is sounds like Samoza and Candy is .. dandy ?

sorry

Asia, fwiw
Spoiler:

1. Burma
[2. Java]
[3. Singapore]
4. Thailand

No idea what the connection is. Thailand could be Siam, I suppose. Still doesn't help me.

dotting i-s and crossing t-s

Europe
Spoiler:
1. I think all of these squares are named for the clock in them.

So the connection is clock/sun-dial/calendar/watch .. instruments for helping track time.

Spoiler:
I think Siam makes the most sense and given Burma is an answer all I could guess is something to do with the death railway. Maybe they were all the prisoners of war who built it, but that's a stretch compared to other connection.

Spoiler:
meh - mebbe you're right, but it seems kinda thin and - history fail on my part - how does Java build the death railway? but it could be, perhaps.

when I was out walking I was wondering about places with name changes, but I don't really see how to get beyond Burma and Thailand. but I suppose everywhere changes name eventually
