Basic rules of the game:

Quote:
Two teams play against each other at one time. Each team has one spymaster/clue-giver, and the rest of the team are guessers.

A 3rd party will rand a grid of words, using this SPREADSHEET, whereby red team has 9 words, and blue team has 8 words. The 3rd party sends both a blank grid, and coloured-in grid to ONLY each team's clue-giver for that round.

The goal of the game is to guess all of your teams words before the other team guesses theirs.

Spymasters/clue-givers can only communicate regarding the game in the form of (Word*, Number) at the beginning of their go, or to update the game status. For example, if a clue-giver wants his team to guess the words "Umbrella", "Glass" and "Gate" he might say "Water 3", indicating 3 words connected to his clue. The rest of his team make individual guesses in the game thread until they are incorrect, they pass or they reach the maximum guesses for that go, which is the number given (3 in the example) plus one.

The spymaster has the option of "unlimited" for his number where his team can have as many correct goes as they can, if they choose to do so. He can also use "0" for his number, which has the same effect as "unlimited", HOWEVER, he is indicating to his team that the given word before "0" is NOT linked to the words he wants to be guessed.

*Words have to be single words, no hyphenated words, made-up words, foreign language words, etc. The exception is proper nouns, so I can use 'George Washington' as a clue. Acronyms can only be used as a clue on its own and not a clue within a clue (ie FBI is used as a clue only as FBI the entity, not as Federal and Bureau and Investigation).

No extra hints: DO NOT say something like "This may be a bit of a stretch...WORD NUMBER". A spymaster may not say a word that is on the grid, until that word has been revealed. An invalid clue or extra hint, instantly ends the team's go. If you are unsure of a rule, PM somebody not involved in that round for help, or just play it safe. Do not spew.

Spymasters may do research, but keep in mind that your teammates will not have that luxury.

Guessers are NOT ALLOWED RESEARCH of any kind. They are only permitted to interact with other guessers, and not the spymaster (ie No instructions for future goes, etc). It is advisable to discuss answers with teammates, but try to keep the game flowing at a decent pace. You do not need unanimous approval before guessing.

Each team must make at least one guess per go. To make a guess, simply bold the word, or write "Official guess X". To pass, simply bold the word pass or write "Official pass". All first bolded/official plays are final, and clear intent also applies. Do not edit to bold or unbold.

In every grid, there is one assassin word. If you guess this word, your team instantly loses the round. There are neutral words which if hit, will end your go and expose the word as neutral. If you hit an opponents word, the word is revealed and it is now their turn.

After a bolded guess, one of the spymasters will reveal whether the word is blue, red, gray (neutral) or black (assassin).

Spymasters should try to update the grid if possible, and ideally post how many words each team has left, and all clues by both teams so far if they so wish. This makes guessing much easier.

NO DISCUSSION OUTSIDE OF THE GAME THREAD ABOUT AN ONGOING GAME.

One thing to consider for newer players is the choice of word should be very carefully chosen by the spymaster. Giving a clue of 'Washington' instead of 'George Washington' may mean that I want you to also think of Washington the state, not just the person. Especially when someone gives a more complex word or form of word than they had to, think about why they did that.

To see the game in action, here is a current game-thread
.

Here is an example of what the spymasters should receive before each round:

Link to the rules of the game it is based on.

This will be a mini-league of 4 teams. Each team will play each other twice: once as red team and once as blue team.
  • A win will earn the team 3 points!
  • If a team wins comfortably (opposition still has 4 or more words unguessed), they gain an additional 1 bonus point!
  • If a losing team only have one unguessed word remaining, they gain 1 consolation point!
  • Ties are broken as follows: Most wins> h2h points> words not guessed in h2h games> total words not guessed> words not guessed in worst game> rematch!

The bottom two teams will play a 3rd place playoff, while the top two teams play a Grand Final!

Ideally, there will be 6 players on each team so each player will have a round as spymaster in the league stage, and the team can choose who they want as spymaster for the final. More players are welcome to join after we have 24, but they may not get to be spymaster unless one of the original 6 offers their go. All teams and new entries will be randed, unless low participation requires balancing.

Participation levels will hopefully not be an issue for guessers, but try to be spymaster for your team when you have time to keep an eye on the thread.

We won't have a strict time-limit for goes right now but try to keep the game flowing, and we may need to refine some rules but see the game thread that is currently going for an idea of what is expected.

Nicholasp27 has done a fantastic job bringing this game to POG. I hope this is a success as it has been great fun so far!

Hoping to start as soon as the current game finishes.

I assume all the above players are in from the other thread, and as said above, participation only needs to be a decent level for your spymaster game.

Extra entrants may be added to low-participation teams first, or randed.

Of course my horse.

You and the next 3 signups have the option of spymaster in the league.

More signups for guessers welcome after that too.

I noticed in the official rules that if an invalid clue is given the other team has to call it out. Once that happens the offending team loses their turn AND the next spy master gets to reveal a word of their choosing on the board.

If this seems too harsh a penalty I'm fine with playing without the revealed word. I guess the logic is that you can't unring the bell of the bad clue, so the penalty is severe.

Seems a little harsh if its an honest mistake that doesn't give a big advantage.

I will leave the door open for a little mob justice in certain scenarios, these rules can hopefully evolve naturally.

Potentially yes. I anticipate that the teams may end up with more than 6 players, so it might not be an issue.

Spymaster is selected by the team so that each player should do it just once in the league stage.

It may turn out that people do it more than once, but in the interest of fairness, this is what we will try for now.
