CATEGORY 1

A song that objectively speaking is a sad song, but that makes you feel happy for whatever reason.

A strong category. The bottom and top two songs were pretty clear, but judging the middle section was super difficult, with a lot of songs at about the same level.

What would I submit?

Spoiler:
Belle & Sebastian - I'm a Cuckoo

Weird, because this wasn't the sort of thing I had in mind when I created the category. I more wanted actually sad-feeling songs that paradoxically make people happy. But even though the tone of this is sunny pop, the lyrics are undeniably sad.

I'm not actually a huge B+S fan in general, but I love this one where they took the production a bit more upbeat and flamboyant.

Fun fact about this song: In the chorus where he sings "I'd rather listen to Thin Lizzy-oh" the guitar plays a chord progression lifted from "Boys Are Back In Town". Check it out.

This has the distinction of being the only song in this category I disliked.

Spoiler:
SMUTTTT with Salad Days by Mac DeMarco

I didn't like this at all. I don't think it's a good song and found the singer's voice annoying. His vocal flourishes really detracted from the song and he was quite obviously out of tune at some points (comments on YouTube suggest the problem might be the guitar tuning - I'm not sure).

Things get pretty harsh from this point on. All the songs were pretty good and something had to come second last.

In 10th place, scoring 2 points

Spoiler:
Jabonator with Empty by Eva & Manu

Like I said. I mean there's nothing wrong with this song at all. The reason it ended up down here is that I feel like there's more production smoke and mirrors going on in this song than actual songwriting. That made it a bit dull on repeated listens.

Vanilla icecream ITT.

Spoiler:
WesleyC with I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You by Tom Waits

That's the problem with this. Solid song and all, but it's pretty by-the-numbers songwriting. I saw the switch to "I think that I just fell in love with you" in the last verse coming a mile off.

Matters get even worse from this point on. The last two tracks were kind of "eh, decent song" but everything from this point on I actively like.

In 8th place, scoring 4 points

Spoiler:
tappokone with I'll Cry by Reigning Sound

Not the sort of thing I'd usually listen to, but I like their sound. Those backing vocals are sort of evocative of old school rock'n'roll somehow. It ended up down here because it's more something I appreciate than something I could see myself listening to much.

Quirky sort of song.

Spoiler:
Willi with Cry For Judas by The Mountain Goats

The total disconnect between the lyrical tone and musical tone I actually found a bit offputting in the end. Hard to process "I'm still here, but all is lost" being sung in such jaunty tones. Not sure what I'm supposed to feel when listening to it.

Time to go old school.

Spoiler:
Dexy with Patches by Clarence Carter

I thought I was going to hate this the first time it kicked off, but it's so infectious and likeable. Can't fight the funk. Unlucky to be in such a strong category

Crimson Fox with Blood on the Rooftops by Genesis

Not a huge Genesis fan and hadn't heard this before. I like it a lot. Kind of a stage musical feel to it, a sense of grandeur. Really good lyrics as well.

Chris that's because you are probably unfamiliar with Steve Hackett who quit right after this album (which coincided with Genesis' more poppy feel.) Hackett was a master at atmosphere.

He and Phil Collins wrote this song before Collins turned terrible. This is mostly Hackett's song tho.

Yeah... so. I didn't know what to do with this. I don't really want to be docking points for obviousness if I can help it, because being 35 what is "obvious" to me might not be to people a decade younger, and also because in the signup thread I specifically said to assume I don't know things. But this song is also so familiar to me I can't help but regard it as a bit of a Hallelujah.

Spoiler:
DonkDonkDonkDonk with Waltz #2 by Elliott Smith

Thing is, this is his most well known song I'm pretty sure, so I feel OK about knocking what is a fantastic song off the podium.

Spoiler:
I doubt your jimmies are really that rustled by that.

Spoiler:
They will be when you see what you lost to, though.

I have no clue what songs are well known or not. I only downloaded 100 songs when I was like 13 and that's all I know of the guy. I didn't realise I was sending in Bohemian Rhapsody.

CATEGORY 1 PODIUM

Remaining to reveal are Nick, Bloobird and Monkey Banana. I'm a little annoyed that my first podium consists of the usual suspects, but what can you do.

In 3rd place, scoring 9 points

Spoiler:
Bloobird with Pretty (Ugly Before) by Elliott Smith

Yeah. I demoted Waltz #2 below another Elliott Smith song pretty much purely on familiarity. Is that fair? Hey, LIFE ISN'T FAIR.

This song is also really great, though. It's typical Elliott in that it's really melodic, but based around chords and harmonies rather than a single melody that you hum.

In 2nd place, scoring 10 points

The top two spots were a battle of one song I didn't particularly like at first but that won me over, versus a song that grabbed me immediately and never let go. (You both know who you are, I'd say). Which one lost out in the end?

Spoiler:
Monkey Banana with Give Me Another Chance by Big Star

On first listen I felt like this might be a bit slow and maudlin, but it's understated charms won me over. Gorgeous harmonies and some nice moments of sparseness in the arrangement. What started off sounding melodramatic ended up coming over as straight sincerity. A pretty and moving song.

In 1st place, scoring 11 points

Spoiler:
All I wanted for my walrus was to knock Nick off his perch. GOD ****ING DAMN IT.

Spoiler:
Nick Royale with London! by Frida Hyvonen

Just one of the best pop choruses I've heard in ages. Loved it from first listen and kept coming back again and again for another fix. I also really like the image of a city as a lover spurning her.

That's it for reveal 1! Hope you guys liked these songs as much as I did. Gotta go grab some lunch and will be back a bit later.

I note I've linked Waltz #2 again instead of Pretty (Ugly Before). I'll get Monkey to fix it.

Also, having received two Elliott submissions, I went and read the wiki about his death as I'd never known exactly what happened. I'd always thought it was straightforwardly suicide, but that seems, um, a little dubious. Here is his partner's account of what happened:

Quote:
Smith died on October 21, 2003 at the age of 34 years from two stab wounds to the chest. At the time of the stabbing, he was at his Lemoyne Street home in Echo Park, California, where he lived with his partner, Jennifer Chiba. According to Chiba, the two were arguing, and she locked herself in the bathroom to take a shower. Chiba heard him scream, and upon opening the door, saw Smith standing with a knife in his chest. She pulled the knife out, after which he collapsed and she called 9-1-1. Smith died in the hospital with the time of death listed as 1:36 p.m. A possible suicide note, written on a Post-it note, read: "I'm so sorry—love, Elliott. God forgive me."
