You can manually go from page 9 to page 17 (in the url) to read the whole story. It's about a cheating scandal in the 1979 national BAM at the spring NABC in Norfolk. It's somewhat more interesting than the usual bridge story to me, since I've played against several members of the 2nd place team from that BAM quite a few times at regional events in Michigan (Hann and Jabbour, in particular).
I skimmed it. Interesting, but a bit fantastic and overblown. Just not sure what he really thought he'd accomplish.

Tournament attendance update: Louisville is def out as is Portland next week. In the process of relocating (AK to ID) this month. Sectionals anywhere in the MT/ID/UT/WY area are in. Upcoming regionals various places in the west (Reno this new years for instance, which I've almost-but-not-quite gone to several times) are good prospects.

agree that the author seems a little too involved. However, given the circumstances, I don't disagree with his conclusion -- at least to the extent that the title should be vacated.

The move: an alignment of stars. Girlfriend wanted to be closer to family, new job paid better and was more interesting, my regular bridge partner up here moved away last fall, variety of minor annoyances.

The Sion/Cokin story: interesting reading. Wasted 2 hours of my remaining time in my old office going through it. Funny how it has never attracted any attention in the past; for that reason alone I am glad it's out there now. (I was playing bridge when Sion got kicked out again, and knew he had a checkered past, but had never heard any details.)
Even more interesting, in a way, is that it's a step towards quantifying the value of information like shortness. I've often wondered if perhaps a 'shortness first' bidding system might have real merit.

Define "good enough". Tournaments have lots of events and lots of brackets in those events. There is something for everyone.

Someone mentioned the Vanderbilt earlier.

In all seriousness, I would like to play in it — it and the Spingold are the only big NABC events I haven't yet played in. If anyone knows of a team that would be a match for me and needs someone (or if we want to consider getting a POG one together, but see below), lmk.

The caveat: I don't care how good my team is, because it's not like I enter events like that with an expectation of winning. But I want really to be legitimately participating, which means a serious card and a fair amount of practice with it, plus a good amount of discussion of defensive methods. No one has to promise to play well, but I think everyone owes his partner/teammates — and, in an event like the Vanderbilt, the rest of a the field — his best effort.

Interesting, but difficult to read, as the facts are obscured by all the purple prose.

I would love to do this (and would take it very seriously), but I won't be around for the Vanderbilt, unfortunately. I'll arrive Wednesday night, possibly in time for the side A/X swiss, and I'll be around for Thursday-Sunday playing either the Silidor Pairs or the RR Pairs with Kfay and the Jacoby Swiss with you guys on Saturday (and Sunday!!)

2 dumb 2/1 questions:

In each case, what kind of hand does 3 promise?
1) 1-1N; 2-3
2) 1-2; 3

Last edited by Wyman; 02-08-2011 at 10:51 AM. Reason: our agreements are that 1M-2X; 2M does not show 6, and that 1H-1N; 2S shows extras (ldo)

Hand 1 an impossible 2 bid is available, and 2c only promises 3. So probably like 5 clubs and a distributional 8-9 HCP or so.

Hand 2 going to the 3 level requires a little extra. Like 15+ HCP and 4 clubs or so.

2C promises 2 on H1 chuck (4=5=2=2), at least by our agreements; a rebid of H promises 6
