Playing tonight at the club with Jim — this makes like eight sessions of duplicate since I came back. Very pleased. And it's about 50/50 whether I'll go to Orlando. (What other POGgers, besides fmk obviously, will be there?)

Only played 71 hands with PBAL. We started out way down in the hole. Then we reseted the score when we played against 2 pretty good people. They didn't play the rest of the time, but we still ended up +IMPs when we quit. So PBAL has definitely got the endurance part of the game down

Haven't we discussed this before? (I suppose deja vu is possible; I confuse easily.)

If yes, I would think once is enough.

That's it — I'm going. fmk, see ya there; everyone else, come on down.

Ah, four session days... it's gonna be good to be back. (For those who skip the morning sessions, you're missing out — that's a good time to catch old-time pros playing single-session pair games. I remember one very sleepy session in Boston that I almost didn't play, but was glad I did when I got to play a couple boards against Benito Garozzo.)

Hey guys, watching some German final thing on BBO and an interesting hand (to me anyway) came up.

Sitting E-W, South deals and passes.

East:

7
KT96
KQJT53
54

West:

A62
A84
A
AKQJ76

Now obviously 7, 7 or 7NT is laydown. How would you bid it?

Neither table in the "German Cup 2010" got there.

Spoiler:
Their auctions:

p
p p 2D p
2H p 2N p
4C p 4D p
4H p 4S p
6D

p
p p 2C p
2D p 3C p
3D p 3N p
4C p 4D p
4H p 4N p
6N

Tough to bid IMO. I think you have the seats wrong too. Anyway,

P 2c
2h* 2n
3c* 3n
4d 6n

2h = 2 controls (1a or 2k)
3c = puppet Stayman
4d is a natural slam try

Looks like an auction I could have with my p.

Edit: Actually, with only 2 kings, it's pretty likely that we're never taking exactly 12, so maybe punting 7n is reasonable. Could rkc in diamonds to find out about dkq.

Spoiler:
First, partner will show good diamonds, meaning KQxxx or better. That's key. If you don't play that way, it's a lot harder.

If partner has an outside king in addition to good diamonds, 7NT is there. If not, we need to play in diamonds, which will work if I can ruff a club; I'll guess that I can, because I need to go above the safe level (3NT) to find out). And if I can get to partner's hand to draw the diamonds, then I'll have twelve tricks exactly if partner has five diamonds, thirteen if he has six. Because we may be off the diamond jack, though, in this case I'll bid six diamonds.

The alternative is if partner has no outside king but has club support, in which case there will usually be a third-round club spot entry to the KQ of diamonds. In that case we'll make six.

2C – 3D
4C – 4D
4NT – (whatever response — doesn't matter as long as it's ace-asking)
5NT – (whatever indicates the king of hearts)
7NT

If 4NT won't be some form of ace-asking on that auction, then as opener I'll jump to it immediately, then ask for kings. Upon hearing about the diamond king I'll bid 7NT.

Oops, I miscounted tricks. Looks like I need a way to find out about the diamond jack. pita.

Playing my old relay precision:

1C (artificial, strong) – 2C (diamonds, 8+ HCP; game force)
2D (tell me more) – 2H (some four-card side suit)
2S (tell me more) – 2NT (six or seven diamonds)
3D (tell me about your diamonds) – 3NT (two of the top three honors)
4D (diamond jack?) – 4S (yes)
4NT (ace ask — not natural after a positive response to last question) – 5C (none)
5NT (king ask) – 6H (two)
7NT

Atak,

How long are you staying in Orlando, and what do you have partners for? Bored today and was looking at Fri-Sun flights either for the Reisinger or the NA Swiss and then the Sunday swiss (but I think I remember you saying you had a team/P for the reisinger already). J would probably murder me, but I put chances of coming at ~ 5%.

GL in the blues, amigo.

I just realized that the Spring Nationals in Louisville fall perfectly on my spring break. Looking forward to a sick week of bridge then.

Aw, hell, and just a 4 hour drive. I may have to convince the wife that a long weekend is a good idea, or convince myself that it isn't. (Not that I care about when your spring break is )

Of course, the last time we attempted a "4 hour drive" to an NABC, it was through a raging blizzard and took about 8 hours.)

well ****

maybe i'll skip orlando and plan on L'ville for Mar 17th-20th (open pairs or the red ribbons and the swiss, i guess). Would love to go for the imp pairs the fri-sat before but i doubt i can swing that. Here's to hoping for a cheap flight to pop up.

I'm here for the week. I do have a partner for everything (I picked up a random for one session of the A/X pairs yesterday, but I'm set for the rest), but we have no team yet for the Reisinger/national Swiss (haven't decided which one). If you have ideas for a fourth, we could definitely do it. Partner and I are clicking well even if we didn't tear things up in the first session of the Blues today (49.74%, probably just on the cusp of qualifying if do that again tonight), so if you need incentive we'd be decent to team with, but I'm not available to pair with atm. Too bad.

We played 1NT overcall for takeout, roman jump overcalls, and 10–12 NT today — probably had eight boards that were affected by those. Best of the day was when my highly aggressive roman 2H (onAJ96 KJT8 8532 2) after Eric Rodwell's precision 1D led to a near top (45+ on a 51 top) against him and Meckstroth when they misjudged and got to an unmakeable 5D.

Let me know whether we can work something out.

Our worst round was against Boye Brogeland and his wife — still not sure why we got only 9 matchpoints for letting her make the normal eleven tricks in a normal, easily biddable 4S against we have no sacrifice. (She's stunning, though, so it didn't feel awful.)

No other superstar opponents, and no awesome hands to report. Maybe tonight.

732 . . . . . Q86
K97 . . . . . AQ842
A9872 . . . 653

KT754
JT95

I guess many declarers must have lost a trick to the heart queen, even though there's no reason ever to take the finesse — the third one should be pitched on a club, then two ruffed after the trump splits. idk
