First 4 POGgers to "in" are in.

I'll be the permanent Dasher (host) and will not be eligible for any points.

Scoring:

1 point - for each time someone guesses your definition
2 points - for guessing the correct definition
3 points - if your definition is very close the actual definition

We'll do 10 rounds.

Carl, IRTM, AMI, and Zeus are our players.

Here's our rules:

- Players will have 24 hours to submit a definition to me after I post a word in this thread.

- Players will have 24 hours to make a guess in this thread, after I post all of the definitions. Just post your guess as a spoiler. No need to PM your guesses to me.

- I've got a list of words I found on a website. I'll pick out the ones that appeal to me.

- I'll use the preview definition found on a Google search for the answer which I give as one of the clues. They seem to use more than one source. Here's an example.

- I'm going to post your definitions exactly the way you send them to me, so please be careful with spelling and grammar.

I think that's it. Any questions, just ask in the thread.

Good luck!

WIDDERSHINS

1. A small child's toy, made primarily of wood chips, given as part of a rite of passage in Amish tradition.

2. The move pattern of sound waves during an echo.

3. Taking points above the quantity bid in certain trick-taking card games.

4. In a direction contrary to the sun's course, considered as unlucky; counterclockwise.

5. A Scottish rock formation covered in luminescent algae.

Spoiler:
These all seem wrong to me lol. How can a toy be made of wood chips? 4 seems weird, wording of 2 seems off, and not buying 5. Gonna just say 4 despite it not quite making sense to me.

The correct definition was 4.

1 was IRTM
2 was AMI
3 was Carl
5 was Zeus

AMI and Carl each get 3 points. IRTM and Zeus get 0.

Please discuss these in the thread to help me make the game better.

1. Should I copy/paste the word-for-word definition or would it be better if I re-word it to make it look less formal? For instance I probably would have said something like 4. In a direction contrary to the sun's course, considered as unlucky or counterclockwise.

I thought the semi-colon was a dead giveaway to the correct answer, but then again I knew the answer.

2. Should we do 1 word at a time or would it be better to speed the game up by doing 2 (or more) words at a time?

I'm cool with you changing the wording- I think it can improve things.

And also happy to do 2-3 at once

1. I agree that the semi-colon gave it away. It’s the main reason I guessed it. So altering it slightly to make it little less formal might make sense. OTOH we as players might also try to adjust. I’m fine with whatever others want.

2. Whatever suits you.

You forgot to award points from wrong guesses.

I'd say keep the definitions word for word. It's not like we all auto-guessed the correct answer. Also, this game is a lot about learning to imitate the style of the definitions, imo. If you hadn't posted an example, I would have asked for one. I don't feel super strongly about it, though.

If you do decide to alter the definitions, can you post how you would have altered this first one?

Fine with doing multiple words

Good points from Carl as well. I’m fine with trying to better emulate the style of the dictionary definitions. Either version works for me.

Guessing the correct definition is 2 points. Carl & AMI each get 2 points for that. Having someone else guess your submission is worth 1 point. Carl & AMI each get 1 point for that. So Carl & AMI each have 3.

I'm going to leave the definitions verbatim & will continue to use the default example that comes up when I type "[word] + definition". The only changes I made on the first round were to capitalize the first word of each submission you guys sent and I ended every submission with a period. I'll keep up with that as necessary.

If anyone already PM'd their Round 2 submission to me and wants to change it to make it more or less formal before the deadline that's fine.
