Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in the early fourth century CE, which legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire and facilitated its more rapid spread. Christianity had been around since shortly after Jesus's death but was viewed mostly as a cult and often persecuted until the Edict of Milan.
Charlemagne, a Christian Frankish king, was the first of a line of rulers known as Holy Roman Emperors, crowned in 800 CE if I recall correctly. The issue is that they were neither Roman nor particularly holy (indeed they often fought with the Pope).
