The Big Extravagant Werewolf Draft of POG 2014


Hey guys! With the recent influx of new players, debates about who are true GOATs and the fact that the last one was AGES ago, I figured it's time for us to have at it again.

For reference, here was our last draft, courtesy of Thingyman. Looking back at the big board feels almost silly in parts:

• Traz/wahoopride/atakdog/shortline99 went in the top 5 (These guys don't play much anymore);
• Captain Binkles was still relevant;
• the likes of Shark Sandwich and CalledDownLight turned out to be mega steals at their spots.

Which frauds will be overdrafted and exposed? Who will be the next last round gem in the rough?

Basics

• 12 Drafting owners
• 12 rounds
• Every owner is encouraged to do a write up on their picks - partly to help refresh our memories about the greatness that once was for the memory-challenged, partly to rustle some jimmies
• Do not mention [UNDRAFTED] players at any time during the draft!
• Picks can be traded among the owners. Trades are to be posted in this thread and verified by both parties.
• 4 hour pick period per person, with a dead period of 11PM EST - 8AM EST per day, where the 4 hour clock will stop for the time being. Don't like the N.A. centric dead zone? Too bad
• PLEASE PM THE NEXT DRAFTER THAT HE/THEY ARE UP AFTER YOU MAKE YOUR PICK
• Drafters ARE allowed to draft themselves. Because I said so. The picks had better be accompanied by the GOAT writeups or prepared to be heartily lambasted by the crowd

Pick the best players. Back up your talk with a great write up or expect to be lol'd by the rail. It's up to the drafters to justify the picks and the rail to interpret greatness and the subsequent picks.

The Voting

We will be utilizing the same voting system as the 2009 draft. A separate voting thread will be created in which full write-ups for all the teams will be posted. All POGgers are then encouraged to openly cast 3 votes in the thread. The votes will have varying values, based on the order you post them. In one single post you will enter your votes in order. Your votes will receive the following point values

1st - 5
2nd - 3
3rd - 1

The winner will be determined by highest combined score.

Already decided who we are taking but will be waiting until 8am tomorrow to make selection. Just want to take our time and make sure we are making the correct selection here.

Our number one pick covers all the bases. He has a good claim to be the strongest villager on the site. His wolf game is elite - better than any active player's who could arguably rival him as a villager. His consistency is unparalleled. He has shown great staying power, with 102 games played over a period stretching back to 2006. He's an acknowledged authority on WW strategy - the authority, I'd say.

2013 was a good year for him. He came in at #2 villager, #4 wolf, and #2 overall in the 2013 power rankings - losing to a player who played many more games and in particular many more mishmashes. His turn in Duckburg's Make-a-Wish vanilla+ was the single strongest villager performance I saw in 2013. Tappokone also had the good fortune to be on his team, as wolves this time, in the Black Books slow game, in which he brought home the bacon in style.

Eye test is what matters most, in my opinion, but it's worth noting that stats love our pick. He has low lynch percentages in both roles, one of the highest night kill percentages as a vanilla villager, and the highest ELO ranking on the site.

Look we traded up to #1 to draft a cornerstone for our WW franchise. Someone we could build a team around, regardless of role. Soah measures impressive in all the WW metrics as both a wolf and a villager.

He was far and away #1 on our board and worth giving up position later in the draft to lock up. He has some GOAT equity and the complete storybook of his WW career has yet to be written.

Certainly you talk about the kind of player you can build a franchise around, you talk about a soah. Has all the sort of intangibles you want in a villager or wolf and a real in thread presence. As already pointed out, his stats make him a compelling 1st overall pick and I think Team Tappo/Redd really felt like they couldn't miss here.

Certainly there are questions about maybe a lack of recent mishmash participation but you can't knock the work ethic when he does play. And without a doubt, you talk about vanilla/v+ numbers at the combine, you'd be hard pressed to find better numbers than were displayed by soah.

Certainly Howl's points are well founded. I do worry about team chemistry in any given setting when soah is villaging. I do envision games where he openly antagonizes other villagers and make it difficult to cooperate. Certainly a small crack in an otherwise splendid armor though.

Isn't that like pretty clearly the #1 pick anyone would make. Reputation -> Stats -> duh.
