Basically yes — every other planet, and the sun and the stars. Lots of other people thought that too, but Ptolemy was the one who got quoted most during the Middle Ages.

Ptolemy pretty much single-handedly set us back 1000 years technologically.

I can forgive him.

I'll never forgive Aristotle for the air pushing arrows thing. Jesus, how stupid can someone be?

I'd say what did that is the general idea that "science" could be done by sitting back and thinking about how things ought to be, then assuming (and stating as true) that they actually are that way without bothering to notice whether they really are — in other words, that truth can be divined without benefit of observation. My understanding (which admittedly is limited) is that the most influential advocate of this approach was Plato, who was widely read pretty much from his life until, well, now, and whose teachings formed the basis of "classical" thought for more than 1500 years; I'd say that he, more than anyone else, is responsible for the Dark Ages.

Ptolemy was just doing what Plato said he should do: think about how the universe ought to be (his answer: concentric spheres, with Earth at the center), and then tell everyone that that was the truth. Ptolemy just happened to be particularly good at it.

(I may be pretty wrong about much of this, but that's how I've read it.)

I have absolutely no idea on this question, and have clicked a button accordingly.

Does anybody else ever mix up Atak and Amp and think "huh, that was a really insightful post Amp made."

basically to keep his philosophising in line with the geocentric model, he had to somehow explain how Venus' retrograde motion (where it appears to move backward in the sky) could be explained if everything is revolving around Earth

so he was like damn, thats a good point. but! if we say each celestial body is on epicycles (hence when i said Ptolomaic circles), it could be explained

basically each body is no longer orbiting something else in a static position, but also moving in a circle while orbiting

but this became super complicated, and he had to start managing epicycles within epicycles

and then some guy named occam was like yo, i think the simplest solution is usually the correct one, and people were lika ya ok that makes sense, this epicycle crap is garbage, heliocentrism ftw

...thats the gist of what i remember learning about the history of geo vs heliocentrism

yea

if you look at the layout of the solar system that had to work for the ptolemaic method to be correct, and then you look at a simple copernican system, it's pretty lulz

I said Galileo because of the scene from It's Always Sunny where he's made to look like a bitch. Confused him and that other bitch Aristotle.

I mean, if you know that Van Halen only had 2 in it, then you don't really need to know anything about the others.
