The red=venomous myth comes from the misconception that venom is only used in self defense. Predators don't want to advertise their presence whilst hunting. See: all spiders (except red ones and peacock spiders). Other bright colors can also signify danger. Most often yellow but you see the whole spectrum in poisonous (not venomous) amphibians.

It actually makes a lot of sense now. Predators don't need coloring to warn off other predators. I hadn't thought about the distinction previously.
