An official response is guaranteed for any petition that draws enough signatures — 5,000 names within 30 days — after it is reviewed by staff and the appropriate policy experts within the Obama administration.

The online petition program comes as Obama has been urging the public to press their representatives in Congress to act on his ideas for creating jobs and balancing the federal budget.

Sounds good, assuming you get enough people to sign on they say they will issue an official response.

idk if I want the Obama admin publicly talking about poker, let alone supporting it. repubs could go rogue on us, being the contrarian asswipes they are.

I pasted the Step 1 info below. The PPA has enough members to get the signature and would probably be the best to centralize this push.

I started one and said, "They took our f'ing jobs man!" J/K

Something about poker regulation, job creation, and/or tax revenues would be good.

Step #1
Create or Sign a Petition

Anyone 13 or older can create or sign a petition on WhiteHouse.gov asking the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. To get started you’ll need to create an account and verify your email address. Start thinking about the issues that matter to you, what you would like the Obama Administration to do to address the important challenges facing our country, and who you’ll ask to join you.

This, the worst case scenario is

Obama: *something about gambling*
Repubs: OMG HE WANTS GAMBLING IN YOUR KIDS BEDROMS RAWRRRR

the dems compromise too much, to a fault. they compromise so much they adopt republican ideas like cap and trade and a health care individual mandate. the repubs then become asswipes when they flip on those same ideas and start demonizing them.

we're seeing some support from the right for the first time outside of libertarians, I don't want our cause to get thrown under the bus in the name of politics. it's bad enough we have a democratic senate majority leader on our side. we don't want a secret Muslim black panther radical socialist publicly saying this idea makes sense to him, especially when everything he does or wants is wrong from the start.

Obama is a horrible negotiator. But, we don't want him (nor will he) take the reigns of the poker regulation charge. We want to get it thrown in with all of the other jobs and tax stuff for the super committee.

We should do this, but thats a good question. TE said it was delivered to Obama at some point, but that whole thing basically went into the ether.

I can't wait to see how this turns out. An official response to any petition that can garner 5,000 signatures? If my intuition is correct Obama's staff could work 24/7 and still be unable to respond to all the petitions if this turns out to be as good as it sounds. Or is it going to be one generic response per generic and widely encompassing issue:

1. Weed response - nay
2. Guns response - yay
3. Poker response - eh?

I think that trying to move our issues through John Campbell in the House and Reid in the Senate is a better strategy. Stay away from Obama while he flails around.

After thinking about this I think this is much more efficient (lobbying specific congressmen for support). However I think our primary force should be aimed at those on the fence or indifferent to the issue and those opposed. Obama will do what Congress tells him to do.

I'm worried that even if we get 5000 sigs, which is no small feat, this would bring the issue of online poker to people who don't need to see it yet, possibly getting bad press from republicans and obama who doens't want to alienate half the nation by saying 'yes' to online poker.

A subtler strategy in congress is probably better.

However, if I believe in democracy, I should support this. 5000 people giving their voice in support of online poker represents a greater population and any good elected representative wants to represent the people as best they can.

Besides, if another petition, 'ban online poker once and for all' is created, it would be best if our petition would beat that one.

President has to sign the bill into law though. For all we know Obama will veto an online poker bill. Pretty unlikely, yes, but the evidence from his DOJ is not reassuring. Cant hurt to remind him there are voters who care about this.

I would think we would want any President of the United States to support online poker. Weather it be Obama or the next president elected in 2012 or 2016.
