Federal decision could mean law may not bar Internet poker

Quote:
"(The) admission by the Justice Department that current federal law is insufficient to protect against both off-shore and unregulated Internet gaming proves the clear and urgent necessity for federal action," said Alan Feldman, senior vice president for public affairs at MGM Resorts International, in a statement.

Feldman urged Congress to act, saying with this decision there will "certainly be an unprecedented growth of gambling that provides no consumer protection and permits unlicensed operators access to the U.S. market."

With all the attention the issue is getting, how possible is it for the Govt. to make something happen in, say, March or June, completely unrelated to anything? As I understand, iPoker has the 2 month window - the 2 month ~Tax Cut Extension negotiations (is this correct?), where something could very likely happen, but beyond that, is it at all possible for anything independent?

Imo, it is possible. I think it can now even happen during the election cycle as as a vote-getting issue for Congressional candidates. Candidates that need anti-gambling votes can vote for the federal bill as a measure to stem the tide of illegal internet gambling through banning of all interstate and foreign i-gambling except licensed i-poker. Candidates that need pro-gambling votes con vote for the same federal bill as a measure to establish a national framework for licensed and regulated i-poker in the US which protects the American consumer.

There was another segment this afternoon, but I can't find a link to the video. That's twice on CNBC in the same day.

Lotteries starting poker sites? Don't hold your breath...

California to explore online sales of lottery tickets [LA Times]
O'Neill said that the California lottery would not consider online poker at this point. "Internet poker's a whole other discussion," he said.

He didn't say when the lottery would make a decision.

Pappas did an interview earlier...they showed a clip of him for a few seconds saying we need to bring the sites to the US instead of offshore.

Stupid ****ing Fox News (or media in general). I'm sure Pappas was talking about how he wants to see only poker regulated, but of course the stupid ****ing segment they show didn't portray that message.

The rest of the piece was entirely negative talking about addiction rates are going to go up b/c the interwebs are accessible (we already have evidence to suggest otherwise). 7-8 MILLION new addicts. **** OFF YOU ****S
