Guys, the bill isn't going to be an "Online Poker" bill. Its going to be a strengthening of the the UIEGA Act and will explicitly outlaw online gaming but will carve out poker as an exception. They're going to spin it as if they are doing everyone a favor by outlawing online blackjack and other house games. The more they spin it that way the less controversial it will be.

No, of course not. It's been tough. I've been on this pretty much full time for over a half-decade. I've noticed it's tough.

This isn't someting that just came about. We have been going for this for years with allot of battles lost and allot of huge let downs.
We've won the legislative battles. We've not yet won the war, but we get closer to victory each day.

Agreed, and I'm strangely comfortable with this approach...

No. Sorry.

If he posted the same stuff but in favor of online poker legislation, no one would complain. I am impartial here and I have to look at is that way.

I understand that people bash him. In fact, as he chose a deliberately inciting screen name I'm not very sympathetic to his plight. Still, he can post his thoughts here -- even unpopular ones -- if he stays within site T&Cs.

Uhh. Pretty sure if you came into 50% of legislation threads and claimed you knew that legislation was going to pass and then ran away and never offered anything to back it up I would complain. He is not annoying simply because we disagree with him.

can't you accidentally ban him on purpose though? I am sure there is some terms and conditions you are looking past that can make this happen.

Any guess on when we will find out on whether or not poker made it in?

This isnt really going to work.

I mean yes, it will be Kyl's explanation, and the bull**** reps send to their constituents years down the road will mention they passed a bill to strengthen the ban against gambling.

The headline will read "xxxx bill includes provision to legalize online poker", and it will generate controversy.

I think, outside of getting Kyl onboard, that spin matters much more for a standalone bill than it does for attaching it in committee to "must pass" legislation. The "must pass" legislation provides the cover and spin.

the problem I see with this bill is that there are simply too many eyes/ears on the payroll tax cut. 160 million Americans want this **** to pass, they are paying attention. Did any average Joe hear about the Safe Port Act? Hardly

Well before Black Friday you wanted the US gov to sign off on offshore poker as it was. This of course was before FTP showed us what we already knew.

I want the same thing you want. Legal online poker hosted, regulated and taxed in the US.

I am not just naive to believe every twitter rumor is all.

I disagree. RIGHT NOW All forms of gambling are legal except sports betting. So "carving out for poker" is still restricting gambling b/c online poker is defacto legal based on the DOJ ruling.

Carving out poker doesn't seem to be hugely controversial. There is already horse betting online, the lottery, the stock market and $5000 fantasy football leagues. People seem to ease up on their anti-gambling stances when the subject in question does not fall under the traditional definition of "gambling" (to most this breaks down in their heads as being no more complex than putting $50 down on red or black) and is uniquely American, both of which poker has going for it.

"We still have about 40 million people who are unemployed," Mr. Reid said. "We cannot leave here without the conference committee having resolved a way of dealing with unemployment compensation."

You could always deputize one of us for a few moments and we'll do it ;-)

Is it possible that no news is good news in this situation? Last time we got the news that it wasn't attached before it went through, iirc. Is is possible they're playing their cards close to their chest? (Unintended poker reference)

Think of the drunk idiots in vegas crawling back to their hotel rooms after losing at craps all night, turning on their TV and seeing yet another advertisement for "Caesars online poker". The donk mulls it over for a few moments, lets out a "**** it" and fires up a $500 SNG.

Then theres the average guy going about his day with his iphone in hand. He opens his favorite online poker app and dusts off a few hundred playing PLO.

Money will rain from the sky.
