Thank you for contacting me about online poker games. I appreciate your correspondence and hope you'll find this response helpful.

As you may know, a 1999 study commissioned by Congress about the social and economic impacts of gambling in the United States found that internet gambling created unique concerns that Congress needed to address. While states have the authority to govern gambling, many online gaming sites are based offshore. Therefore, no regulatory body existed to ensure that the integrity of the games or that the players were of legal age.

Due to these issues, Congress wrote and passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which was signed into law in October of 2006. This act forbids U.S. credit card companies from completing transactions with most internet gambling sites.

However, it's become increasingly clear that the 2006 law simply went too far in unfairly restricting legitimate online activities by law-abiding users. That's why I supported legislation which would stop regulations to be issued that ban online poker playing.

Thank you again for contacting me about this matter. I appreciate hearing from you and assure you that I will always do my best to represent the views of my constituents in Congress. In the future, please do not hesitate to call at (202) 225-4476 or contact me through my website at www.chrismurphy.house.gov, where you can sign up to receive updates through MurphMail, my electronic newsletter.

Every Best Wish,

Christopher S. Murphy
Member of Congress

Is he a co-sponsor?

I do not think Chris Murphy, D. Ct is a co-sponsor. Tim Murphy, R. Pa. is a co -sponsor.

Chris Murphy, D. Ct,. is a comparatively junior member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He is also a member of the sub-committee on Techology. He is toward the middle of the road so a bi-partisan bill may interest him.

He is running for US Senate.

Well rooting for his Senate run then, seems we need more senators on our side.

I am hoping for more. A comparative moderate making it a campaign issue woulds be great! It might gain us support from moderate Ds and Rs. Given that this is Ct., I do not see it exposing any Religious Right opponents of ours but it may expose a Nanny Left opponent.

In any case, I am emailing and tweeting him.

I have received many letters from congress people in CT. I have actually spoken in person with my state rep of my district .. and even that person told me that she would: "Do what is in the best interest of the people who live in my district" - whatever that means.

I do appreciate that many of them are writing what looks like thoughtful e-mails back ... but they are also automated. Wait a few weeks and e-mail him again, you will get the exact same e-mail back. Its just a staffer who was advised to use this template if they get poker e-mails.

The reason I posted this is because he gave a clear stance. I don't really care about him sending out automated emails...How can you possibly respond to thousands of people and address each and every issues. It's just not plausible.

Good to hear CT being pro poker though!

Governor Daniel Malloy of Connecticut stated back in January, after the DOJ opinion on internet gambling, that bringing internet poker to Connecticut was inevitable. Some of his Republican opponents immediately jumped on him, but he's stood by it so far.

How did UIGEA unfairly restrict 'legitimate' activity? Wouldn't that unfair injury be a cause for a lawsuit?

Also, what 'legislation' was put forth and which poker play 'regulations' would be stopped by it's passage? Did the legislation pass or fail?
