It's against the rules--just like what pokerstars/fulltilt/AP did was against the rules. Just because the gov't says it's not allowed doesn't mean it isn't total BS.
Steroids are GOOD for professional sports. Now, I'm not going to argue that there have NEVER been problems health or otherwise because of steroids, but these athletes are consenting adults who choose to push their abilities and careers to the limit. Steroids:
-Reduce the chance of injury. You better believe it. Especially in contact sports like football, hockey, etc... Stronger muscle tissue, stronger connective fibers=less chance of a pulled something, a strained something, or a broken something.
-Extend careers. Do you really think somebody like Brett Favre would have been able to play as long without utilizing every nutritional edge he could get.
-Make the games more entertaining. As fans, we like to see the fastest, strongest, most skilled players doing what they are able to do. Football would not be nearly as exciting if there weren't people like Shawn Merriman who weigh 260+ and still run a 4.3-4.5 40yd dash.
-Steroids, like it or not, actually level the playing field. Like it or not, everybody utilizes them. If, within the professional world, the use of steroids was actually stigmatized (which of course it isn't), there would still be a small percentage of people that chose to use EVERY resource at their disposal. The way things are handled now, teams have their own physicians monitoring their athletes, making sure that players are training properly.
These are just a few points off the top of my head. But believe me, I could go on with this argument alllll day...
