Anyone else feels really bad when they are below the starting stack during a tournament? Anyone else feels really bad when they are below the starting stack during a tournament?

Personally, I find myself feeling like the tournament is going really bad or there is little hope when I find myself to be below the starting stack. It could be as low as 80% of the starting stack and I already
think it is going bad while there should be plenty of opportunity to recover when the blinds are low.

Anyone else have this and know what to do about it?

At some point in the course of the tourney you will need to shove. Either you will lose (and obviously be correct that your tourney isn’t going well) or you will double up. If you are using correct strategy you should not have such a short stack that a double up would not put you in decent shape. When you are down a bit just focus on how you will be positioned after a double up.

You should feel bad if you're under average stack. Shove 10 big blinds or less and don't order any food unless you intend on firing more bullets.

I tend to play tighter during early levels in a tourney when others are playing looser, so am comfortable being below starting stack as I wait for good opportunities while letting a tight image build.

The issue I am trying to work through is how to play when I am 2x or 3x starting stack early in a tourney. I dont like bleeding chips by playing weaker hands out of position just because I have a large stack, and given that too many pots early on are likely to be 3- or 4-way, I dont want to bully either, especially if a short-stack decides to make a stand with JT suited and wins

Don't worry about your image, play the cards you're dealt correctly.

In that position you probably should not play any differently. That 2x or 3x stack will not mean much later on - you still need to look for opportunities to chip up profitably. The amount of chips to be gained by playing overly aggressively is minimal compared to the risk of running into a big hand and losing a big pot. Best to just preserve that stack and play solid poker. Treat the extra chip as insurance in case of a bad beat or a mistake - instead of busting out in those cases you would still have a more average stack.

You guys are right, being below stack is not good and feeling bad about that is natural. The double up or lose really does put things in perspective as well. I was around 70-80% stack for like the first hour in the tournament but then got a double up and an another chip up after. Things can really change fast and you are either correct to be in a bad position or in a good shape after a double.

Thanks guys!
