Ryan, is the issue here that most people use default settings, so on UBB ~15% or whatever of users jacking it up to 99 threads/page wasn't an issue? And that if you put the default up to 30-40, then all users having that setting increases server load?
If vB is faster than UBB, and on UBB you allowed this to be a user-customizable setting, then what's wrong with treating this the same way on vB? There may well be a valid technical reason why this doesn't make sense, and if so then please explain; but for now, it seems like "even though all these issues were probably available for abuse in UBB, and even though vB is faster and should be able to handle 'abuse' of these features better than UBB, we're disabling them."
If I don't log into a forum like, say, BBV for a few days there can be like 150-200 unread threads. Going through a couple pages was wayyy easier than jumping through 6-7 pages now will be (and even that's only after you bump it up to 30, right now that'll be 12 pages!).
