IDK, I couldn't log in the new site. Told me an admin changed my account, so I had to reset my password.

Followed that link, input my email. Despite being told that an email has been sent, it never arrived.

Also, shouldn't 2p2 know my email? Having the user input one on password resets is a pretty big security hole. All the bad guy has to do is get a legitimate username.

Here's a short version of why we are migrating to Vanilla.

The current VBulletin software is no longer supported. It runs on a platform that is no longer supported. We were faced with moving to *some* other software. The size of our forum presents migration challenges. Vanilla has worked with us to hopefully make the migration go smoothly. Others either wouldn't or couldn't.

Vanilla has a showcase of sites using their product:

https://vanillaforums.com/en/showcase/

It seems like there's a wide array of configurations.

I like the Battlefront one:

Everyone asking for a night mode:

This can be done on a full browser (not mobile) with some workarounds. You need the Stylus extension so IE and Edge users can gtfo

Install Stylus
Chrome or firefox

This extension lets you modify the appearance of pages on your own end. Lots of people create night mode themes specifically for certain pages like Amazon, Google, Github, any big or nerd site really. And while 2p2 is perhaps the biggest nerdiest site around, it managed to slip through the cracks. Thankfully, there's universal dark theme!

This will install a less-than-perfect dark mode across everything, it can be turned off with one click, and permanently disabled for sites, too.

To add that click here and click install

and then go and edit the style and at the bottom, below all the text, there's a field "applies to" change the dropdown to "urls starting with" and paste

https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com
and save it(need to give it a name)

And you should be good. There are some things I don't like about the original one, instead of using true black I think it uses some background image. That can be changed... along with just about anything else. I like my version a lot. If people are stuck, confused whatever shoot me a PM and if there's enough interest maybe I'll put a quick YT video up.

Supported by what? That's incredibly vague. Windows 7 is no longer "supported", but still works

Not vague at all. "Still works" may be a fine standard for kids playing video games at home, but it's no way to run a business, and a professional would understand that.

No development. No security updates. I am unsure of the current status of Windows 7 with respect to security updates, but if they aren't happening I sure wouldn't run a business using it.

Don't change it, I enjoy the forum how it is.

Can you tweak it or something?

Like trying to read a thread, it's like a wall of text.

It's terrible.

First: to login to the new forums (now, or after migration) you will need to go through the password reset process. The emails for that should now be working.

Second: we will be making tweaks to the new forums based on the feedback we receive from you after the migration.

Are the old 2+2 threads gone forever? I've never been able to find anything here or on the archive sites that Google leads to.

Since you guys own that content it would be cool if you posted it on the new forum as a classic 2+2 archives section. Or even as an e-book.

I really don't like this new format https://twoplustwo.vanillacommunitie...48160/hi-there
Is there a way to keep the classic version skin like this on Vanilla?

I'm also afraid all the older people who don't like change won't like it, and they are a substantial part of the community.

I know this isn't a democracy, but can you take a poll to gauge customer reaction?

Thank you, I love 2+2 and don't want it to get worse.

is that what you're after?

on Vanilla's "vBulletin vs Vanilla" marketing page, they say that you can:

Quote:
Override Vanilla's CSS to make it look exactly like your website.
what do we need to do to make that happen? No one cares what the back end looks like if the UI and front end stays the same.

but please for the love of all that is holy in this life and the next do not change to what that preview link displays. We are all going to be in a weakened state soon enough from coronavirus, we don't need this monstrosity finishing us off.

vBulletin 5 is still supported - an update just came out in October. Why can't an upgrade to vBulletin 5 be done instead? What's gained by moving to Vanilla instead of VB5?

I hate change, so I'm going to be biased to these forums, but I haven't actually checked out the new software, so I am acknowledging my bias first. Also I've read everybody's comments and know I'm in for a shock.

Ok now I've looked at it, navigation is not as bad as I feared, but the layout of threads is as terrible as advertised. Hopefully there is a way to switch to a different skin that makes each post stand out as it's own post more.

Good luck with this it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Cheers!
John

We'll all be fine. Those of us olds that were around when 2p2 switched to vBulletin from whatever it was got over it although I wasn't an old back then... Anyway, took a couple weeks to get used to vBulletin and it wasn't long that going to look at the archive was a PITA.

Change is always hard but you get used to it. It's all over your life from switching from Windows 7 to 10 and when you buy that Toyota after driving that Ford for so long.

Will we have to do anything special to keep the classic threads from going away? I can't lose my lathe reference.

All forums look horrible, the current 2+2 just doesn’t feel that bad to us because we have been used to it for so long.

Web forums are just not very 2020 and the major use case these days is product support and other stuff nobody wants to spend money on. Because of that, there’s no money to develop anything that looks and feels good. If vbulletin or Vanilla would rake in a couple billion a year, they would put out a cool product.

This one below doesn’t look too bad. It’s good to see it’s customizable. We’re just seeing a bland, no-frills, vanilla (pun intended) version in the 2+2 demo.
