Hey guys,

Some of you who post here own domains/web sites and probably know this.

I'm looking to buy a domain name and set up a web site for a project of mine.
I've found a good name which I assume is available (it times out when I try it and doesn't redirect to one of those "this domain is available, click here to buy" things). It's a .com

So where to go from there? I read that I need a registrar, some authorized person/company who can register it for a fee. But where can I find someone reliable?

Asking here because google hits on this topic result in biased blogs and what not..

many hosts will give you a free domain registration. i use hostmonter and like them. godaddy is for fish.

There's a great megathread in BFI - My website ownership experience. Take a couple hours to go through and make a lot of notes about the various resources available for site building. I guarantee its worth your time.

Godaddy is big and corporate so typically people like to complain about it and say things like its for fish, but it works for millions of websites and isn't all that bad. But yeah free is good.

I know many people including me who also like bluehost. I have a few websites hosted by them.

Godaddy was more of an example that the type of sites you were enquiring about are common and you seemed a bit concerned about unknowns so I gave you the daddy of them all.

I decided to register it with godaddy as most seemed to agree that it didn't matter much who you registered with (and this was cheap enough if ignoring all the extras they throw at your face). The hosting was more important, and I'm probably going with HostGator when I get there.
But I need to produce the basic content first - I'm really hyped and need to relax a bit and structure my "product" properly
