2p2 under attack again? 2p2 under attack again?

Is anything quasi-exciting going on on the server side, like maybe suffering from another DDoS attack? The past day or so I've encountered greatly increased load times, and the entire forum was down for real a couple hours ago, albeit only for a few seconds. (Confirmed on downforeveryoneorjustme)

I'm going to a be a bit disappointed if it's just the hamster.

Firefox released an update to version 11.0 this week.
I noticed that twoplustwo is noticeably slower since the upgrade.

I have switched to Google Chrome and the response time is faster when browsing twoplustwo.

I think that's part of it for me too — hadn't noticed the firefox upgrade but had seen that the forum was much faster on chrome, so I've been checking extensions (without finding any problems there). So I figured that was it, until it went down this afternoon.

Also, firefox is noticably slow for me only on 2p2, so something funny is going on.

Use Opera IMO. Blows away Chrome and FF, and has excellent features.

But I don't like Opera. I can't understand Italian and I don't like dressing up. Oh wait, not that kind of Opera.

I had problems too yesterday as I was able to reach 2plus2 but couldn't sign on and then I couldn't even get 2plus2 to come up.

In a larger sense, the forces of good that 2p2 represents so well are always under constant attack.

I use chrome and couldn't log in pretty much around the time of the OP. When I did get in, after about 5 minutes, I got a screen that looked like internet circa 1990. That lasted for a few tries and then it loaded normally. I also tried explorer just to see if it was chrome acting up but neither worked correctly. Also, load times have been pretty slow the last few days. I'll get into a sub forum but notice that it's still loading in the background.

+ a lot.

It is certainly a lot faster than FF and IE and usually faster than Chrome.

I think two different things are going on: 2p2 is slower the past couple days than usual (on several different browsers including FF in safe mode, and on both Mac OS and Windows), but also, the recent firefox updates, or something else about firefox, are compounding the problem greatly, at least for me.

The following seems to have fixed the second problem, the firefox-specific one, for me: Find your firefox profile. (Google for where it is, because it hides — in Lion, for example, it's in a folder that is normally invisible.) Find the file sessionstore.js. Delete it. (I suppose you should do this with the browser shut down.) Restart firefox. The sessionstore file is only storing your recent tabs and stuff, so you won't lose anything big like bookmarks, history, and extensions.

Why this should work, I don't understand, but as I said, it helped significantly for me.

The site is still noticeably slow, though.

It was pretty slow the last couple of days for me, but only very slightly slower than normal today.

While I'm stuck it always says "waiting for stats.big-boards.com"

It does seem to be stats.big-boards. I just added that to my hosts file, and the slowdown seems to be gone.

I think in the past that sort of how-to discussion has been nixed from ATF — it's more a CTH forum thing.

The short answer is I didn't know how to do it, so I googled.

I mentioned it primarily so the ptb can have confirmation that whatever object or whatever is tied to that address is slowing the forums down a ton.

figured it out
added

0.0.0.0 stats.big-boards.com

to the hosts file.
reference for help

if it makes the site unusable, screw it. I'm posting the solution
