For the first time a few weeks ago, i told someone at my job (waiter) what my side job was (building a roll)

"Me: Well I'm working on this side job. Hopefully it'll work out and i won't have to do this sh* anymore

Her: What is it?

Me: Its an investment venture. It involves equity analysis.

Her: Oh. Like stock market type stuff?

Me: A little bit like that. I basically make small investments based on my predictions about their long term worth. There's a lot of variance involved, but if it pays off, in the long run i could make a lot of money.

Her: Cool!

Me: Ok, I have to be honest. Everything i just told you is true, but its not what you think. I play poker.

Her: *laughs* (in a good way, not a mocking 'are you serious way')

I would agree with you pujolsnet, if you didn't post in that car thread extolling the virtues of the Mustang.

I like this answer. It's true and keeps questions to a minimum, good stuff. I don't play for a living yet, but this thread is epic and has made me lol many times. I've only been playing a few months and I've already heard half of what's in here, I can't imagine playing for a living and having to deal with the questions and things people think.

I had just planned on telling people that I stack fish all day, but equity analysis sounds much swankier.

it has many views because it is a good read. i am humoring your troll attempt but also attempting to illustrate just how poor your trolls are. at least make them funny.

Cant beleive this thread, who on earth would want to talk poker with some of you lot, you are stuck so far up your own cracks its beyond belief.

God forbid if anyone with an iota of interest in the game tried to seek a little encouragement from some of you so called pokerpro's and interweb superstars, with the attitude a bunch of you have towards people as a whole you will contunue to be big fish im sure, but the pond will be getting smaller and smaller as no new blood would entertain the smug self serving attitude you display towards others.

in the past year a lot of hot chicks i have been interested in have asked me what i plan to do in the future. i hate telling people that i make loads playing dem pokaz so i tell them idk. i feel like they think i am a loser or something and have no future. weird how the thing i wanted to prevent ended up happenning anyway. so 2 weeks ago this real hot chick asked me and i just straight up told her the truth. she said that sounded cool, and that was the end of it.

funny you mention this. astonishingly, when I was at some tournament organized by the math department at a local (reputable) university, i hardly spot more than a hand full of people that actually had much of a clue.
i agree that scientific students have a better foundation of math/probability theory but as long as they don't actually study the game they are often as clueless as everyone else. and to be honest, the math required for some simple decisions isn't too hard to figure out, even for the average joe you just have to get used to the setting.

although the schedule was tight, the structure in the beginning was the way you actually could play some poker (i.e., starting with something like 100BB). many "smart" guys then figured that it's ridiculous to play with blinds "that low" and just went on to raise 15BB preflop (with crap, of course).

I have found something that seems to work better than explaining how poker works. If I don't think the person will understand poker, and they're worried that I have a gambling problem, I approach it from a different direction. I just say that (insert person concerned about me being a "gambler" her) doesn't need to worry, because:

1. I don't "spend money" to play poker. I use money that I have already won, money that is sitting in my PokerStars account.

2. Every time that I cash out my winnings, some of what I won goes for spending money, some is set aside for taxes, and some is left in my PokerStars account to build my bankroll.

This doesn't explain poker, long-term, EV, and all that good stuff. And saying that I don't spend money to play poker is at best only technically accurate in the narrowest sense of the word "money". But it does seem to reassure people that I'm not a compulsive gambler who is flushing his money down the toilet.
