Whats the best way to quit Poker?

A friend of mine was also addicted to slot machine games. Now he is playing Playstation 3 (Battelfield) the whole day. It's the cheaper addiction.

I prefer to change to a computer game(but not online poker) if you get hooked easy on something. Or look for a hobby which isn't expensive.

e.g.
WOW, Counterstrike, Starcraft 2 is coming too in a couple of months

What can I substitute my addiction with? I was thinking chess, maybe? or photoshop?
Give me the $1k and I will tell you.

hard drugs ftw? or find urself a girlfriend if u havent one already. Preferably a non-poker player. and try not to let the pokerz come between you.

failing that, I'd go with addictive computer games, but plz dont become like those WoW idiots who call each other by their SNs and discuss their "quests" at social gatherings even with others present (doing this for poker is okay, imo, but not some medievalist masturbation fantasy POS). I tolerated my roommates doing this for 2 years straight and almost went bat-**** crazy if not for my frequent doses of recreational substances and groups of other friends.

if u can't let go of poker, u degen, like someone said, play the micros and get better. You probably don't know the first thing about playing TAG ABC.

play 1/2 or 2/5 live, thats easier than 100NL online, has more of a thrill (because you win/lose more money) and is more of a social activity.

Ban yourself on your accounts to start off, ditch the ftp and fpps.

If this is for life productivity, I don't know how good video games will be, they will be cheaper though.

Don't quit, the poker economy needs you!

But really, maybe you could just deposit a small amount once a week, and try to run it up really high before going bust by playing like a maniac? There have been threads where people run their $50 deposit into thousands of dollars and inevitably go bust. This way you could limit the amount of money you lose by only depositing a certain amount every X days, or whatever.

whenever you figure it out let me know please...

and the game crap doesnt work.. I bought a brand new ps3 with 3 games. I came home and sat it down beside the tv but i decided instead of wasting time hooking it up I would gamble some. 6 months later and still brand new sitting in the same spot my g/f put it on craiglist for me and sold it. The worst part is I am a winning player and ranked 98 on OPR but the poker just consumes wayyyy to much time and i every second i get i play. On top of all that ive gotten my g/f hook on DON's.

If you're looking for excitement you should try some sik life gambles like running across an 8 lane highway with nothing but timberland boots on or driving reverse down a busy street after drinking a bottle of tequila and see how long you can survive before the cops get/shoot you.

Why quit?
You go to dinner and a movie and it's $50.
$50 can last you a long time playing poker if you need it to.

Why don't you just watch poker vids and try to get better?
Play 6max, HU, donkaments for a change of pace?

lol this will teach you to post a serious comment in this forum.

I think you definitely have to go cold turkey. Tilting off like $1k isn't going to do anything, other than make you feel like crap, and if anything it will probably make you motivated to continue playing to win it back or whatever. I definitely wouldn't try to replace poker with a computer game, as per some of the AMAZING advice given in this thread, as you'll just end up with the same waste of time/dependency. I'd withdraw all the money you have on sites, uninstall them, and stop visiting forums/even watching poker on tv if that gets you started.

Find some balance in your life. Start working out, hang out with friends more, find something you are interested to do - take some classes at uni/college, volunteer, play sports/fish/hunt, learn/play an instrument, cook nice food, etc. Hard to give advice on this since no idea of your situation. But in all likelihood you will have to substitute the "hole" left when you quit poker with something else, so find something that will enrich your life. And from the sounds of it you really should be quitting - i think for some ppl losing money in poker is fine since it is a form of entertainment (and all entertainment costs something) but it doesn't sound as if you enjoy poker/find it relaxing enough to justify the money you are dumping. And I think you are right that you probably aren't ever going to be a winning poker player - if you can't beat nl50/100 HU after 4 years of playing you are unlikely to be able to win. Another thing that is very important to consider is that even if you did win, poker can still be a negative addiction (-EV life for you and those around you). So gl, but i'd try to remove all poker-related things from your life and replace them with USEFUL activities (ie. don't get addicted to WoW instead coz that is probably even worse).
