Brief history: i live in new jersey, been grinding 2/5 for a living since March '07. The 90 minute drive to AC wasn't fun, but playing poker instead of having a job sure made up for it.

Then, last fall, a new poker room in Pennsylvania opened up much closer to my house. I ran horribly the first week, dropping over $4k at 2/5. I was not a big fan of the new room, and a few things about it tilted me, but whatever the reasons, it took me several months to reach break-even. After 400 hours of play, my win rate was a paltry $2.07/hr in the new room. I assumed things would have to turn around, because the action was great, and sure enough, they did. But even I'm surprised at how much so. Flamers can flame, naysayers can say "nay," but I keep meticulous records using Poker Journal, and since April 1st, my win rate at 2/5 has been $66/hr. This is over a 600 hour period.

The point of sharing this info is not to pat myself on the back, but to let people know how much of a grind live poker can be. I was basically treading water for five months, wondering if I was going to have to drop down to $1/2, or worse...go look for a job. And just like that, I had a monster run in April, it continued into May, and then another one in August just when I thought my heater was over.

So when players come on here and talk about how they've been winning X amount for 200 hrs, and they're wanting to know if they're ready to go pro, I always shake my head and laugh.
