There seems to be a disconnect about what both parties are talking about when actually I think we all agree on everything.

If you increase the sample you are much more likely to deviate a lot from the mean in terms of absolute numbers. It's also more likely that you are closer to the mean as a percentage.

If you take the s^2 equal to the sum of the deviations squared and devide by sample-1, in any consistent data set the s^2 (mathematical variance) will go down. Take the example of coin flips with the result being either -1 or +1 and average 0. Every hand has a deviation of 1^2 and adds n+1. 4 hands sample has a s^2 of 4^2/4-1 equal 1,25. A 10 hand sample has a s^2 of about 1,11.
