In 2002 I was jobless and getting pretty desperate for work so I took a job at a Maple Leaf pork production plant. It was a terrible job and they had a high rate of turnover so they had all kinds of massive perks for people who stayed more than a couple months.

At Christmas they threw a huge party. There were nine hundred employees in attendance and the company did a raffle where a new truck, a 10K vacation, a 5K tv and a 3k stereo were all up for grabs.

For whatever reason I was sure I was going to be one of the one in 250 to win a prize. They gave away the car, the vacation, the tv and the stereo and alas, nothing for Rempel, but then they announced another prize and my number was called! I made my way through the sea of people expecting something worth at least $1500 and was handed the prize to beat all prizes... a $40 Playskool keyboard.
