So i got into an argument with a few friends about online poker. A couple of them agreed on the premise that online poker isnt actually poker. But not in the standard way that it isnt a real mans game, they meant it in that if you play online you arent actually even a "poker" player. You are just are playing on online game. I mean for example, if you played an NFL game on the computer does that make it real football? In online poker you dont even have chips or cards or anything, and you are missing the actual most important thing about poker, the ability to make reads. You cant make reads in online poker, and thus it couldnt be poker anyway.

How would you combat this?

If you're a good hockey player on the computer, does that mean you're a good RL hockey player? No.

If you're a good poker player online, does that mean you're a good poker player live? Probably.

There you go, problem solved.

Poker requires little physical activity. So it's like saying if you're good chess player online then you're good at chess live.

imo

So you're saying that if you're a good chess player online you aren't a chessplayer, cause it's online, right?

Yeah cause surely everyone at a live game are proffesionals that knows every read, and since you have played on the internet you're a nerd that don't know anything about people or reads.

"Tells" in live games is only one of many factors related to poker. You still need to be able to interprate situations, know when to fold/value bet etc. Knowing the rules isn't enough to be a good poker player.

When playing NHL hockey as a computer game apposed live, the skills are non-transferable. Just because you know the rules doesn't transfer to good hockey play. You know one factor but your missing all the important skills like hand to eye coordiantion and the innatae abiliy to play.

To sum, poker skills are transferable to live games and the only variable which changes are the "tells" with regard to your play. Computer gaming vs. live sports, the only skill which is transferable is your knowledge of the rules and what your slap shot "should" look like.

I think internet hockey players are still better in ice hockey than 99% of the planet's population.

So conclusion: If you are good at something in an internet game, you are good at it in IRL too.

As I said, how good you are at live poker isn't just determined by tells. Most knowledge of a player comes from how frequently they bet, how the play in general. Hey, what do you know, you get these "reads" online too.

Success at live poker isn't determined twitches or the breaking of a fricken oreo! As long as you don't piss yourself every time you bluff there are no spectacular tells of non-drunks. If you so concerned about giving off tells wear a hat and some fossil man specs. (That'll impress the 2/4 table)

If you don't know that villain has the nuts when he looks at his cookie and split it in two before eating it you are not a poker player, that's what OP's trying to say.
