I was playing 1-2NL Hold'em at Firekeeper's Casino in Battle Creek, MI on Saturday morning when a morbidly humorous situation came up.

The Bad Beat Jackpot at the casino is currently up to $43,000. The jackpot qualifying hands is Aces full of jacks or better beaten by Quads or better.

There was a hand which involved two players calling a $30 bet on the river, in with the better showed A9 with a board of A-A-6-A-2. The nine seat who called the bet, says something to the effect of... "wait a second, now look at this for the bad beat.." and flips over JJ for Aces full of Jacks.

The dealer says "No, it is not because both cards have to play", to which the table responds that the original better's hand does play as the 9 outkicks the 6 or the 2 which is on the board. He says "Well, I guess your right... we better call the floor."

Everyone is getting somewhat excited but still holding back because we assume it's not going to qualify in some way with no one knowing the exact rules. I only play at this casino about once every 3-4 months so I am pretty much in the dark on everything.

The floor comes over and looks at the hands/board and goes "Um... Yep... that's the bad beat". The table erupts with High Fives / hand shakes etc. The Aces Full guy is looking at a payday of $20K, with the Quad A's gentleman looking at $10K. The rest of the table was looking at about $2K ish. The floor asks us to remain seated and don't deal another hand until they can check with surveillance.

She comes back over in five minutes and says... "Sorry, you need to have a pair in your hand to make quads and have it qualify for the bad beat". The loser of the hand is upset and questions it but the floor reiterates the ruling. A couple of the players than go over and check the rules which are posted by the brush and confirm that it says you must use both hole cards to make quads.

The table takes it surprisingly well and no one raises much of a stink. I think deep down we all knew something was off. A charity room I play in has a similar rule that says if AAA is showing on the board then the bad beat jackpot cannot apply.

The really crazy thing is I had just been a part of a bad beat table back in Dec. and won $450 table share of a $11K bad beat jackpot at said local charity casino. My head was spinning momentarily when I thought I had just done it again.

Pretty standard for 3 aces on the board to not count as a bad beat jackpot. Otherwise it would hit all the time since KK, QQ, JJ all would qualify. That does suck though since you had no clue what the rules were and the floor said it qualified. Would have been lol if they paid it out. Nothing worse than a BBJBB.

It looks like Farva gave you a worse bad beat.
