"Cluster 5" is an outbreak of a mutated variant of COVID-19 that was discovered in Northern Jutland, Denmark, believed to have been spread from mink to humans via mink farms. On 4 November 2020, it was announced that all mink in Denmark would be culled in order to prevent possible spread of this mutation, and that a lockdown and travel restrictions would be introduced in seven municipalities of Northern Jutland in order to prevent the mutation from spreading widely (which could compromise national or international responses to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The World Health Organisation has yet to release scientific details of this mutation.[1]
Background
Denmark is the largest producer of mink fur in the world.[2] Minks are among the animals that can be infected with coronaviruses.[3] Transmission of the virus from minks to humans was first documented in the Netherlands by way of genetic tracing, which prompted the government to bring forward to the end of 2020 a ban on mink farming scheduled to go into effect in 2024.[4] The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed that cases of minks infected with COVID-19 had been documented in Utah in August 2020.[5]
Timeline
On 4 November 2020, Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen stated that a mutated coronavirus was being transmitted to humans via minks, tied primarily to mink farms in Northern Jutland. A report by the State Serum Institute (SSI) found that there had been at least 12 human infections involving this mutation in Northern Jutland (being referred to as "Cluster 5"), and its antibody response was weak. While the institute suggested that this mutation was no more dangerous than other coronaviruses, Kåre Mølbak and Tyra Grove Krause of the SSI warned that the mutation was unlikely to respond to COVID-19 vaccines currently under development.[1][6]
As a preventative measure, Frederiksen announced that the country was already in the process of slaughtering all mink in Denmark—as many as 17 million.[7] To prevent wider spread of the mutation, it was also announced on 5 November that a lockdown and movement restrictions would be implemented in the Northern Jutland municipalities of Brønderslev, Frederikshavn, Hjørring, Jammerbugt, Læsø, Thisted, and Vesthimmerland effective 6 November, lasting through at least 3 December.[8][6] All cultural institutions, cinemas, theatres, sports and leisure facilities, and dine-in restaurants have been ordered closed, and travel into or out of the municipalities is prohibited. Public transport will be suspended 9 November.[9][10]
On 6 November, the United Kingdom announced that all travelers returning from Denmark would be removed from a whitelist for its COVID-19 travel restrictions. Those entering the country, including returning travelers, will therefore be required to self-isolate for 14 days.[11]
