It's a narrow range spot and the hands were calling with fall
Within a very narrow group and will be easily identifiable by good players. If Lu try and balance this range you will likely either (a) call with hands you should 3 bet or far more likely (b) call with hands you should fold.

This doesn't necessarily mean you can call AJ here but just be aware of your range when playing postflop.

If he did mean you want to balance cold calling some of your stronger hands so you could also cold call some of your weaker hands here, AJs would qualify as one of the weaker ones, not a strong one like QQ. Others are saying you would also be balanced in that spot by having no cold calling hands.

Personally I agree that in most 20/40 games there is really no need for much balance in your preflop play, especially in such a specific and presumably rare spot.

Fwiw I think calling pre with AA in this exact spot is reasonable too

I agree in theory, but in practice, having a cold calling range here will lead to most mortals to make more mistakes both preflop and post flop.

Agree I'm just saying these things aren't that big a deal. It's not like he called 3 cold with T7

FWIW I think calling pre flop is the best option. I think calling gives you more ways to play the hand as it develops.
