I have a PC and a laptop on my internet connection..
my laptop is wireless and pc wired
i have windows vista ultimate service pack 1 on both.....
i am having problems with my laptop that is an ASUS F3JR 32 bit when continuing a wireless connection to my router, after downloading for say, 15minutes all of a sudden windows cannot find my wireless and the internet stops working and will not reconnect and i have to restart my laptop so that it will recognise the wireless.. it happens all the time..
my laptop originally came with XP so when getting vista i have had to go on laptop manufacturers website and download the new drivers, i have had problems setting up the Intel wireless program as windows seems to want to take over my laptop and control everything..
when the internet is dying and just about to stop it says that it is "limited" if this helps
Q's..
what could be causing downloads to stop my computer recognising my wireless?
why after a reboot does it suddenly recognise and work?
looking at network connections when the internet dies.. i have "limited connectivity"
i am also connected to my wireless and it is recognised my signal strength is "excellent" but in the taskbar there is the icon of 2 computers with a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark in the middle right next to it when the wireless goes down then my laptop recognises nothing
it all ends up with a red cross through the taskbar computers
any help is much appreciated

what could be causing downloads to stop my computer recognising my wireless? It's likely not just "downloads" is it? Does this occur regularly or just when you are downloading? if u surf the web for an hour or so does it happen?
why after a reboot does it suddenly recognise and work? does it still have do the 15 minute thing after u reboot? You're just resetting your connection when you reboot.

This happens often with dying connections.

So this never happens with your wired connection? Have you tried hooking up your laptop to wired and trying? If not, try this. Also, try simply power cycling your modem and router by yanking the power out for 10 seconds and then putting it back in. It sounds like you either have a bad wireless card driver or a bad wireless card but answer all those and it will give me a much better idea of what's going on.

All the other stuff you described is typical when loosing a connection.

the thing is sometimes it can go for a few hours and it wont go down.
i download a lot so i could be wrong with just the downloads causing it to stop so i dont know if just surfing has the same thing.
this NEVER happens with the wired connection it never goes down.
next time it goes down i will take the power out the router and put it back and see what happens as this will show if it is the laptop or the router.
after i reboot my laptop it will disconnect again and have the same problem but it will find the wireless network and have internet for some time

Do you have a wireless phone? It sounds to me like you may have some other device operating on the same frequency as your wireless router.

Funny, I have this problem with my desktop but not my laptop...

Do you download via torrents which causes your modem/router to have to handle too many connections and therefore stops working? You can lower the amount of connections in your Torrent client (Azureus, µTorrent, BitTorrent, whichever program you use)

Some routers have significant trouble with torrents clogging their connections particularly the WRT54G models of linksys routers. See http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#Spec..._GL_GS_routers.

However, this shouldn't knock you offline, just slow your connections to a standstill or not allow you to make new connections till you free up your old ones (closing the torrent program), and the way you described your problem, this doesn't seem to be the problem here.

so my computer stops receiving wireless will not recognise the wireless until i reboot which makes little/mo sense

When this happens again, try opening a command prompt (Start -> Run -> Type " cmd " and press enter.) and typing in this order:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

Let me know if your wireless works again after doing that.

i had to update the bios on my gf's laptop to make it stop doing this... something about vista 'verifying' your internet connection every 15 min or so by sending packets to your router. if yours isn't broadcasting (and sometimes even if it is) this could be your issue.

ipv6 is microsoft's new protocol which exists only sparingly in the real world

you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling your wireless drivers.

Hey I got an idea, not sure if it will help or not, but try to portforward your torrent downloads.

looked on utorrent's site and found that my router was in the category that had problems using utorrent its a netgear DG834G v3 so i upgraded the router firmware and have also set global connections to 200 like they said and so far so good so will let you know what happens.
thanks for all help

Hi, my laptop is having windows 7. i have the same problem. it gets disconnected after a while. there are other users using the same router and net connection. they dont face any problem.
how to resolve that?
exact problm: wifi stops after a while if i use it on battery and not on AC power. i reinstallled drivers. but it still disconnects. then i have to restart the system to get back the connection.
I tried that ipconfig/flushdns thing. flushdns works. but ipconfig/renew doesnt works. gives some LAN type error..whih was already mentioned above in this post..
please help

If the problem only occurs when you are on battery, not AC, then check your power settings in control panel - you likely have a power saving setting kicking in and shutting down the wifi card.
