I have a linksys router and the laptop is hooked up to the internet as well as my desktop. Every few minutes I get an error saying that there is a conflict w/ another computer on the network. We've had both computers hooked up for a while so I don't know why there is a problem or what program is causing the problem. If I click on the bubble that pops up it goes away and if I click the yellow warning sign in the system tray it goes away.

How do I stop this conflict popup and also how do I find out what's causing it? It's not comodo because that's not installed on the laptop (the popup is on my desktop where I run XP and the laptop where I run Win 98). Actually I guess it's Windows that prompts me, but how do I make it stop

do you have virtual machines running anywhere on the network? do the computers have different computer names? Do you run hamachi?

Are you using DHCP?

I'm not sure what a virtual machine is so I'd have to say no. I never heard of hamachi so that's a no too. Should I be running it? I'm not sure about whether or not they have different names. How do I check that?

what is that?

FWIW, nothing fancy. I'm just running the internet cable from the router to the laptop. I'm open to any suggestions

copy/paste or screenshot this into the thread

Anyone? Yesterday everything was OK, but today I got the network error again

the problem is back. When I type ipconfig /all a DOS screen comes up, but it closes before I can copy it. I tried resetting the router hoping that would help the problem, but nope.

Are you typing that string into the Run box or at the command prompt?

Check you've followed Freakin's instructions properly.

Oops. It seems that I can't follow simple instructions. I was typing it into the run box and not typing cmd. The problem is OK now (edit: after a restart). When this happened before I noticed that the ip addresses were the same. Now it's different by one number.

Since this has happened several times now can you tell me how I can stop this problem from occurring in the future and what to do if it happens again?

Are you hibernating a computer that's connected, then connecting another, then bringing the hibernated computer back online? That's one thing I can think of that might cause the problem.

One thing to try when this happens is, at a command prompt, type "ipconfig /release", then "ipconfig /renew" on one of the computers (you will need to be logged on as an administrator). This should get a new IP address assigned.

Otherwise, it would seem that the DHCP server in your router is malfunctioning. It shouldn't assign the same IP to two computers. I would first try rebooting the router (pull the power connection, count to 30, reconnect). If that doesn't help, try upgrading the router firmware.

If it keeps happening in the future just give each computer a static IP address. This way the IP's wont expire or renew. You should'nt run into any more issues after you do this. gl
