What can detect a MAC address? I know poker applications can. Could a Flash/JavaScript poker application? Can web sites you visit?

Who cares? If you're concerned that others can figure out your MAC address, read up on MAC spoofing.

Web sites can, yes. There exists malicious code that can obtain your router's MAC address and check it against Google's Street View technology to find the pinpoint location of your router/home.

Pretty neat, eh?

It looks like it's possible with Flash or JavaScript. I do know how to change a MAC address: that's not what I was asking.

Your MAC address is basically public.
In TCP/IP there's "arp", just go to cmd -> "arp -a" to get every MAC address in your LAN.

Even tho arp doesn't work over the internet, the information is in every single packet you send, therefore your MAC address can be obtained very easily.

MAC addresses aren't in every packet you send once they get past your router. The router rewrites the source and destination MAC addresses when it forwards it to the next hop.

You're absolutely right with that, usually the MAC address shouldn't be handed between subnets, although it's very common that you might be able to access the ARP-Cache at the last hop ... no need for details imo.

don't mean to jack the thread, but can these applications identify all the various devices connected to the LAN once one device sends a packet of info?

someone outside your network knowing the MAC addresses of devices inside your network is far from the biggest thing to worry about. if you have a properly secured router (or even in most cases an improperly secured router), someone knowing your computer's MAC makes basically no difference.

Hello, your message helped me in a great deal. I would not know about this before--LOL

That would be true except for the fact that Google has been compiling a database of MAC addresses from wireless routers they see when doing their Street View canvassing and the GPS coordinates they are at, and this database is publicly accessible. So malicious Javascript code can access your router's MAC address and then get quite accurate GPS coordinates of where you are.

If I run two virtual machines would they both have the same MAC address, the one in my network card's flash memory? I assume it would be trivial to change them to different ones in the registry just as it is when running one OS?

I'm pretty sure virtual machines emulate network adapters, so I suspect you can assign them different MAC addresses.

this. goes back to the same thing i said in #3 ITT. they should automatically receive different mac addresses but if they don't you can just go ahead and change them
