Yea I kinda caught myself saying something I didn't mean at first.

I think if you are working full-time or more on something then feel free to call it a start-up.

This is the internet. You're suppose to die defending the things you wrote regardless of if you 100% believe it or not.

When things escalate YOU HAVE TO USE CAPS LOCK ALL THE TIME.

I'm looking to write a hopefully simple android program and was hoping to be pointed in the right direction.

It would display 3 numbers and allow two inputs (a + b = c). Both a and c could be directly inputted, but not b. I would input source data for all potential a and c inputs. If any number inputted didn't match up to the source data an error would be displayed. Along with a clear button.

I've never coded anything before, appreciate anything I could reference. Thanks

I feel that word the "startup" is thrown around loosely. But maybe that's just me.

Afaik, you'd need to learn 1. Java or some programming language, 2. Graphical user Interface coding, and 3. How to apply one and two to Android.

This might not be a weekend project for a beginner.

Why would you manually put in all possible values for a and c? How would you even do this anyways?

It would be from a set list of possibilities like 102 + 8 = 110, 105 +10 = 115, etc Total list would have around 100 possibilities.

Computers are like really good at math so what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

If you just want to solve an equation you can have the user input a and c from your example and get b.

Interesting, thanks. I didn't get a chance to try this today. I am adding some new source code to a system with a really small memory footprint and I had to decrease code memory usage from some c++ code I wrote. It took me all day to trim the code memory usage enough so I will look at this next week.

It is. There are also 500 person companies calling themselves startups. I don't think this is a case where high precision is required though.

I think a start up is a place you go and work 17 hour days. You aren't a start up if all of your employees work normal 8 hour days.

Not sure who should be laughing tbh.

Lol @ asking about funding and employees instead of what he's actually doing and what problems he's trying to solve (and asking technology questions).

Edit: Both startups I've been closely involved with went through a phase with 2-3 people not getting paid and no customers. One did an ok-ish exit and the other is doing really well.
Well it also must haz hypergrowth and disruption. Otherwise it's just a lifestyle business LDO

Last I checked, RHEL is live and kicking, but I'm guessing that's not what you are asking.

massively overprepared for interview. Pretty much only asked about education and two most recent jobs. And even then, only very surface questions.

interviewer seemed to think I was a incredibly good fit, but maybe he was just being nice.

job requirements are pretty light for the pay. Basically the coding equivalent of being able to tie your shoes.

In other news, reworked a large bank project almost completely, and now the driver went from 50 lines of ugly, mangled code down to less than 20 lines of very (imo) elegant, purposeful code.

Lucifer bless the factory design pattern.

Depends on the team.

This was only round one of three or four. Just to weed out people lying on their resumes I think.

Since you're looking for an entry job (I think?) just take it i they make an ok offer I guess. That being said I'd be very, very sceptical of the company in general if that's the interview process.

the pay is quite decent, about $6 more an hour than other places in the area. The company is a quite large, well known, multi-billion dollar a year company. They're legit.

Think they kind of hire anyone and try to build them up, get as many diamonds in the rough as possible.

Had a friend try and do that with a company and they treated him like garbage because he was so disposable. So just something to keep in mind.

Also I would imagine advancement means you'll really have to outshine your competition since there are so many others.

Not trying to dissuade you just playing devil's advocate.

no, that's pretty much what I expect. If I can just get about 2 years experience or so, though, at a big name company, I think that'll make it a lot easier to advance my career generally.
