Yeah I read an article that said they still haven't solved how to drive in the rain. That doesn't sound promising that we'll be sitting in a driverless car any time soon. Like maybe 10-20 years I'd guess.

I was also thinking of the app transmitting some sort of unique homing signal as well. Could control entry to the vehicle too in order to make sure no one takes your cab and that you can reasonably hold someone accountable for internal damage in the cab.

Maybe better served as a dongle instead of an app on your phone.

Phone gps coordinates vary substantially in accuracy. I'm not sure how iOS phones stack up and if there are differences between models, but android devices, being much more diverse, have differing quality of GPS radios. Some of the cheaper android phones simply can't do better than a coordinate that is accurate to within 200+ feet

what do you do if your boss says you gotta put in extra hours and weekends? assume they have no idea about the codebase and just know if the entire project is shipped or not.

Sounds like you are generally anti-boss and putting in hours on weekends. I personally spent about 4-5 hours straight working last Saturday morning, and worked some on Sunday, and have probably worked at least some everyday for the last 2 months.

If that is not the status quo you are going for (understandably) you can probably just sandbag some code locally on Thu/Fri and then check it in over the weekend, ez game.

is your job driving you nuts, and are you thinking of quitting?

I could write an entire novel about how my job drives me nuts.

I think of quitting every single day.

the thing is the boss would have no idea i'd be coding on weekends. they don't know how git works and definitely aren't in on weekends themselves. literally the only thing they'd know is if the entire app is live (or not) on a website.

i think every job has its crazy side, but its up to ourselves to adjust our attitude. i can get another job...but i don't think that's the solution here

RogerKwok, do you have teammates/peers/leads that would know?

The whole situation seems strange to me. How did 'the bosses' decide that the project needs to be worked on on the weekend?

Do any of you guys have problems with carpal tunnel/tendonitis/other wrist/arm conditions?

I started getting wrist/forearm pain a month or two ago and while not a major problem (yet?) it's pretty annoying. I've tried to cut back my personal computer usage and gone to a more ergonomic work setup - but I'm interested if its something other people have dealt with that have any tips.

Yeah, got tendinitis doing data entry for the gubmint in my early 20s. Hurts still, but infrequently.

Got fairly bad iPhone thumb after going from blackberry to iPhones. Compensated by swapping to using index fingers. Not sure if that caused it, but now my middle fingers are really sore all the time.

Played 2-16 hours of WoW for about 9 years on and off. Oddly, I usually had really good posture and never experienced issues there, at least until we got a fancy ergo chair and a new desk that's just a bit too low for the chair. Led to some finger/hand tingling and burning sensations.

Coding at that desk now for the most part, so similar results when I do it for a bit. Also, my posture has gone to **** as my health has, so that doesn't exactly help.

Don't have any tips, much other than 'take short breaks every hour' and 'look up stretches or yoga poses for carpal tunnel', because those do exist. I don't remember what they are, but the first yoga class I ever took, they asked if anyone worked on computers for long hours, then gave us a pose to help stave off CT.

Probably bollocks, but still, anything that helps.

Yeah, the iPhone is one of the worst culprits. I've basically gone down from using it 2-3 hours a day (in bed, on the couch, etc.) to 15-30 minutes.

The doctor recommended some physiotherapy, which my insurance covers, so I'm thinking I'll go and at least learn some of the exercises to do.

Wrist rest for both keyboard and mousepad helped me tons.

Lead a team of offshore and onshore Infosys developers. You'll spend 50 minutes out of every hour answering questions and herding cats instead of using your wrist.

I only did that once, for about 2-3 months. Definitely don't miss that!

I'm also trying to get much more disciplined about using the keyboard instead of the mouse wherever possible.

I am not ambidextrous, but I was able to teach myself to use the mouse lefthanded and now I switch it up every couple days to prevent injury.

Driverless cars from what I have read, are pretty advance in handling random scenarios and experts in the field are saying it will be safer than people driving.

Maybe i'm young but my thinking process is that a lot can be done in a year and specially if given 5 years.
So I would be surprised if takes 10 years and not 5 years at most till they are used for delivering goods to stores.

Interesting idea!

I think I'll give this a try.

Edit: Hah, nm. I have a right handed mouse...

Anyone ever try to go a day without using the mouse?
Some people just use a keyboard and shortcut keys.

Oh okay, you probably have a better handle on this than my just reading random articles.

Also didn't know about their seasonal deficiencies.

One thing I wish wouldn't be a ways off is alternative computer control devices - the fact that we're still interacting with computers with something mechanical that even has to be plugged in seems kinda crazy when researchers are creating cloaking devices, hologram interactivity, artificial memory - not sure what any of those things have to do with mice and keyboards but still!
