I definitely want to do something besides my current business in the future and this is what would be my number 1 thing to do, disregarding the money of course. With savings, current earnings and my gf's income I want to see if I can make that happen within a reasonable time, if the answer is no I'll do something else. I don't want to work for someone else as long as I don't need to, which I fortunately don't, but might at some point in the future. In that case I'd still rank working in the video games industry very high.
That's reasonable. I was asking because the chance that you will be able to work for yourself by virtue of having created a commercial hit is negligible. But you have a much better chance at acquiring the skills to become employable somewhere in the industry within 2 years.

So the past month, I have been working on creating a simple iOS job search app using storyboards. Using Indeed's api, I basically got the searching function to work with pouring results into a tableview. Upon selecting any of the cells, it pushes a webView with the URL of the webpage.

I will probably do away with opening it in UIWebView since it feels cheap. For a comparison you can check out Indeed, Simply Hired (which use UIWebView) vs. Dice (uses their own view). Only problem is that the API I am using doesn't give the job summary info, however the url in the JSON result does have it. So I will probably try and figure out a way to parse that information somehow behind the scenes.

Overall, I am surprised at fast I got the basic functionality down and I am really enjoying programming. As a side note, I just put in my resignation and will be starting school soon in February. This is going to be a big career move, nonetheless a scary one too since I do not know what the future lies ahead. I'm excited and nervous at the same time.

Zalgo is an Internet legend about an ominous entity believed to cause insanity, death and destruction of the world, similar to the creature Cthulhu created by H.P. Lovecraft in the 1920s. Zalgo is often associated with scrambled text on webpages and photos of people whose eyes and mouth have been covered in black.

Congrats! Just out of curiosity, is it remote? I'm passively looking for a new remote gig and considering talking to a recruiter.

Does anybody have any experience with landing a remote job offered on stackoverflow? They seem to be pretty competitive with a lot of applicants. The last company I talked to said they received >90 resumes after just a few days.

Even if the money isn't a big deal you can learn much faster doing an online course by yourself then you can with a weekly course spread over a couple of months.
I'm going back and forth about this for some time already. The money wouldn't be that big of a deal but not spending ~$5k is a good thing obv. The biggest value I see is motivation / commitment since it would force me to get my ass up and go there - I have become a bit lazy over the last couple of years of "easy" money (I never worked a real job before, was a poker player before I founded my current business), also it's impossible to get a useful answer to "How hard would this be to learn for me from 1-10?" or "How fast can I learn what I need on my own vs from classes?". Classes won't start for a month or two, so I've decided to see how far I get on my own for now. Don't worry I won't blog my progress here or something like that

When you say you want to be an indie games developer, what's your goal/what do you want to be doing further down the line?

2D/3D games?
Programming games on a team?
Or 1 man show?

If it's a 1 man show (and I know I have a strongly vested interest in saying this!) there are tools out there that take the emphasis away from programming into the actual game designing which might be a better route. Learning how to make good games is a skill in itself, being great at programming isn't going to make you a successful game dev. However it does give you transferable skills. If you're dead set on making games, you should start by making games.

I've looked at construct before (and would happily send my money to a fellow 2p2er's business over some random's) but I'm not sure if it would allow me enough freedom for the 2-3 "finished" game ideas that I definitely want to do. "My game" for now would be closer to 1d actually - it's a mainly menu driven game, think football manager, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Papers Please, or even some Japanese dating sim lol.

The whole game could in theory be played with paper, pen and (loads of) dice rolls so I'm thinking the actual programming won't be that advanced (certainly compared to anything 3d).

ETA:
Further down the road the games I'm interested in still won't be 3d - I like turn based games, simulations / manager games, this kind of stuff.
One man show would be great but I'd be open to work in a team later. Also not to brag but maybe to show that I'm serious - I'm already getting something developed for some months by a 3rd party and they have now bought a stake themselves because they believe in it, which is the main reason I want to try to do this - I definitely want to get some ideas I have developed and that doesn't come cheap either, so why not spend the money on myself, learning something in the process.

Great idea. If the only motivation you have to learn this stuff is because you've spent 5k that might be a sign that you're not that serious about doing it. Especially since one community college course is still going to leave you really far from your end goal.

The Health and Fitness forum encourages people to start their own threads about their H&F goals and I see no reason why that wouldn't be a good idea here.

There are a bunch of people here that are willing to give you help/feedback from a lot of very different perspectives. I say take advantage of it and start your own thread with your progress and where you can ask for help when you get stuck on something.

The second quote from what people are saying is ridiculous:

Quote:
I just watched one of the lessons, it is thorough and well paced. It is sad that girls are now been objectified as learning aids. The lessons are good, the girls are hot. the concept and practice are really sad. I wish I could say that it was soft pr0n disguised as something else, but the lesson I watched was very good, and it hardly showed the girl. Damned it, why could they not just make it bad so I could hate the whole thing. Thumbs up for the information provided, thumbs down for the method employed. Women are people, not things to be used or sold, either as a whole or as side dishes.

Unity has an asset store with plenty of free assets.

Last night at a meetup with my whole engineering team. A couple of us are chatting with some guy and he's saying how impressed he is with what we've done with 5 engineers. Our female engineer walks up and we half jokingly say that she's equal to 5 engineers. Dude turns to her and says "and you're a designer?"

Hello,

We're currently looking to revamp / destroy & rebuild our company website. Before starting a thread, any recommendations how & where to find someone? How do I know it's a fair price? Reasonable expectation from start to finish?

Thank you.

Have you already asked people in your network for referrals? This is the best recommendation I can give you.

Pricing is tough, really depends on the complexity of the project. If you are able to find someone who has case studies that relate closely to what you are trying to do you can eliminate a lot of the risk. Most people will be transparent and show you a site they built and tell you what the budget for it was. Start to finish also depends on the complexity of the project. Anything from 2 months to 4 months is reasonable, possibly a bit longer.

If you are a "webmaster" and your website rejects my address, which looks like this:

100 1/2 ABC St.

I would like to inform you that my address is NOT

100 1 2 ABC St.

What does that even mean?

Thanks for the response. A couple of my friends are in marketing and they offered to help for between 6-10k. Before we go forward, (it's a family business that we're trying to grow) I'd like to have a better understanding if this is fair & what we should expect.
