This "Did You Mean" stuff on hacker news popped up for Ruby and now for Python. I don't get it. Are professional programmers using Notepad++ or something? I refuse to retype long function names.

When I was getting started with rails, it seemed like a lot of places recommended using a text editor instead of an IDE, so I ended up going with Text Mate. I haven't done anything too complex, but it doesn't seem that bad yet

Yeah but text mate and sublime both have auto complete. notepad++ even might have it.

I finally looked at the python version. The author openly encourages you to not use it.

I didn't look at it because the discussion around the Ruby one was pretty weird. Of course we should encourage people to sort of write what they mean and let "did you mean" do all the work for them.

I also wonder of the author of the Ruby version was just showing people she can hack the Ruby compiler and didn't mean it to be a real tool.

Had my first face-to-face interview the other day. I took a technical test at home in order to get the interview, so there was nothing particularly technical at the interview. Just basic questions about what commands I would use for x and size of the databases I've used.

I have no clue how good or bad I did on this interview. Funny enough, I was interviewed right after db girl. So, I'm competing with her for this job.

Getting ansible to set up a pretty vanilla rails server is proving to be a giant pain in the ass. I never learned chef or puppet so I have nothing to compare it to. I was hoping to find some example playbooks on github and I did, but they're all broken in one way or another. Anyone think I would be better off with chef?

Ideally I would like to be able to find some project on github to match whatever server/db combo I want to use and just tweak it if I have to (while still more or less understanding what it does). Is this asking for too much? Do I have to spend the time creating my own files from scratch? Is this a waste of time?

Not totally surprising. There's not many people in this city that know SQL to the level that she and I know it.

I did know she was looking elsewhere.

When I signed in, I glanced at the last name on the sign in sheet, and there she was. I told the secretary and she laughed. I then asked if I could have a paper bag to cover my head, but she let me sit in another area.

Quite literally, they interviewed her and I was the next person. The interviewers told me they never had this happen before. I joked that it must say a lot about our company.

db girl and I aren't on speaking terms anymore, so no, I didn't know she would be there.

We had different philosophies on how things should be done. She was more Huge Enterprise, I was more KISS and YAGNI, and that caused considerable conflict.

She also felt that I should have helped her out more than I did. I tried my best, but I also have what amounts to 2 full time jobs as it is, and being her PM + sidekick SQL coder wasn't realistic.

There was also some language barriers. Just about everything I said was misinterpreted and her assumption was that I was "picking on her code," which obviously wasn't the truth. One time, I asked her to look at some of my code and see if there was some way to improve it. She laughed at me.

She pretty much gave me an attitude from day one, and I eventually got sick of it, gave her a write-up, which she refused to sign. I was told to fire her, which I didn't do, and she still feels like she can talk trash to me. I passed my headache off to another manager. I'm sure he appreciates it.

Mind that everything was done using nothing but PL/SQL, and yes, it was stupid, and yes, I regret it. But, honestly, it is all she knows, so my hands were tied. There is also the issue that I wasn't excited about doing more than I was considering my pay.

I'm not entirely sure why she decided I am her enemy, but it really got irritating going to work, hear the bosses complain about her, push the entire company to see her value, and then she had the audacity to say I didn't appreciate her efforts and that I was working against her.

Definitely a toxic situation. The job causes way too much stress.

I'm a terrible boss, I guess.

It would be stupid funny if the company decided to hire two people, and then consider that we've worked together as a team...

Looking back at the old posts, seems like she really has a big ego.

Oh well, you live and you learn. Hope you get that job so you can fire her on your last day before giving notice. That would be great :P

I can definitely sympathize with this.

I would definitely get a laugh out of it, but it would be a sympathetic laugh based on how the universe is screwing with you.

The initial intent was to have her do one thing that was supposed to help me and my department.

For some reason, we got involved in something else that was easy. That got expanded to something harder, then expanded to something stupid difficult.

Now, she is completely irreplaceable, so I couldn't fire her even if I wanted to. Well, the system she created would have to be converted to Python or something like that. The way we had to bend the language took just about all of my knowledge. No objects? Let's just build and object table, easy game.

Of course, now that the project is nearly crashing and burning, I get her finger directed my way.

Barrin6, I've been accused of having and inflated ego. Another manager kindly pointed out that she and I have the same personality, so it is only logical that we'd clash now and then. My department as a whole is rather surly.

That's unfortunate to hear. It's funny how someone was mentioning wedding bells in the future and then a few months later it turns into this.

Also I was kidding about the firing her before you leave. Don't do that.

If both of you two got the offer, would you be willing to accept it, knowing full well you would be working with her at the new place?

I'd also be nearly doubling my income and get benefits on top of it. I wouldn't let personal issues get in the way.

daveT, sorry if this is too personal or something, but how can you possibly be making what you call "close to minimum wage"?

There are huge amounts of people who work for large companies that literally do nothing, and then there is a countless amount of people who suck so badly they basically jump from team to team for years and are on failed projects everywhere. Not saying you would be proud to find a situation like that, but you would easily make 6 figures.

I think I went through this bit before, but it is a combination of many things:
- I was unemployed for over a decade. I don't have good job-hunting skills.
- No education.

In a nutshell, I have zero self-confidence, probably terrible interviewing skills, and ****ty life-skills in general.

There was a time I made good money, but really went off the deep end. I'm over that particular issue though. One step at a time.

In a way, the money doesn't really bother me. I like to work hard and like to work on interesting stuff.

It was kind of strange sitting in this interview. They were talking about the vacations, paid days off, paid holidays, benefits, reviews, compensation, and I was completely unfazed. I never heard managers talk like this. I would have thought that all of this was exciting.

Maybe I'm paying my dues and learning so I don't become this very ****-up. Lame as hell to say it, but why not?

Please, no more about this. Not looking for psychological help.
